Heater temp control

My heater temp control was very stiff on the mk5... so being an idiot I forced it with pliers and now it's kna*****ed... I managed to find the control on the heater box (like I should have done in the first place) and operated it manually... it is not stiff so the problem must be with the dial.... well it is now for sure... how do you get the dials out to correct this stupid error?

The dial is a rack and pinion, if you take the section out where the stereo is it's quite easy to see.
