squeeky chattering when engaging clutch??

Postby Harrison » Mon Dec 05, 2005 11:10 pm

Hi all,
I have recently had a new clutch fitted to my 2.5 d and since then i have a strange noise coming from somewhere when i engage the clutch, the best way to describe it is it sounds a bit like a trim phone(one for the oldies amongst us there).
The mechanic left the sound proofing covers off the gearbox housing and said that it might possibly sound a little louder than usual, and i havent got round to sticking them back on ,but was just wondering why this noise has appeared?..
First instincts were thrust bearing , but i saw the mechanic replace that with new one.
It does sound like air rapidly escaping and making a rapid tweeting noise when driving along.

any suggestions?

thanks

Hi Jay, wouldnt the mechanic have changed that when he was doing the clutch?...obviously not...lol.
O.k dumb question but, what or how long could i leave it before real damage starts being done cos of having just forked out for a new clutch and other bits am a bit brassic at the moment?.
I'm assuming like other bearing realted problems that the noise just gets louder an more annoying till you have to get it done.

thanks in advance

It's a 5 minute job to do when the gearbox is out, bit of a pain now it's a back together! Might want to ask the mechanic if he did do it or not!

Hi,it can't really do any harm.If it starts to seize (very unlikely) the result would be !st gear getting hard to engage.I had a noisy one on a transit years back,it ran like it for a couple of years then suddenly went quiet all on its own.

I recently had an identical sounding noise in my tranny after changing the clutch (and release bearing).

Turned out to be the bearing alighnment. It was not sitting squarely on the main shaft or the clutch lever fork. I was when it was fitted on the garage floor, but think it got knock when aligning the box and engine during refitting.

Don't panic though, if can be sorted without removing the box again.

There is a big 'rubber blank' on the n/s bell housing (it's on the o/s if your tranny's a left-hand drive!).

Remove the rubber blank, and with the help of a small torch, look inside. The hole is big enough to put your hand into, and realign as required.

Hope this sorts yours, it did mine !

Hi GMC

your the second guy thats suggested it could be that.
and it does sound feasible cos it was fine for about a couple of days so maybe could have gone out of line.

I'll have a look with a torch and see if i can re-align it myself.
at least i wont have to remove the gearbox.

thanks again

if its the spigot bearing then it will only do it when the clutch pedal in down.and it sounds like a wheel bearing on its last legs..whirring/grouning sound.
