Puzzled: Van wont start, (wont turn over) URGENT HELP PLEASE

Postby Arthur_daily » Mon May 12, 2008 8:38 pm

Here's a tricky one for you guys, ive had a mechanic look and hes puzzled also.

Ford Transit Tourneo, Diesel Manual, No electric windows or AC
Just Bog Standard.

Drives fine with no strange noises or rattles and starts 1st time 'every' time.
Took her out yesterday 100 mile round trip, 50miles there, stopped for a few hours,
Then 50 miles back.
Later that evening i went to pop round the shops, jumped in the car turned the key and...
NOTHING.

well i say nothing, but everything lights up as normal.. there's plenty of power and diesel.
but turn the key to the position where the dash lights up that's all fine
but turn that last bit when she should turn over and there's noting happens.

called my friend who knows a little about these vans and he checked the batt terminals, they are ok
he shorted something on the back of the starter and It turns over, but wont start.
hes had the ignition off and cant see anything out of the ordinary there.

anyways, we left it at his pal's place and this morning his pal had a look and 'said' wiggled some wires and it started.

so today we went out for a few hours and everything was fine, but this afternoon we stopped at a shop for some cold drinks.
Went back to the van and yup you guessed it she wont start.

So, turn the key and all the dash comes on,
turn the key one more position and... Nothing, no click, no sound nothing, wont turn over
but put 12v direct to the starter and she Turns over... but wont start.

yes, it has an immobilizer but tell me this... dose the immobilizer kill power to the starter?
or would it still turn over but not start, if the immobilizer is faulty?

all the fuses are ok and the relay in the fuse box looks like its making contact ok when the key is turned to on (dash lights come on)

I'm baffled, my pal is baffled and you guys have been wonderful in the past with helping me on what I thought
was puzzling faults.
I pray this one isn't to much of a head scratchier.
I'm supposed to take the kids away this week, im in BIG DOO DOO with the missus at the moment guys.

PLEASE HELP

Thanks for the Fast reply mate.
And that link has been 100% Bookmarked,, lol ;)

But sadly, i get nothing from that LED at all. never have as far as i know.
Its always never illuminated, and isn't doing anything even with this current problem.

could this mean its NOT the immobilizer ?

and your 100% sure the immobilizer (if activated) kills power to the starter
where as putting 12v direct to the starter sill wont start it (but will turn over)
Remember, we left it over night and in the morning with the (apparent) wiggle, she started.
only for the fault to return this afternoon.

I can confirm that on a non turbo Di, the immobiliser will kill the pump and the starter motor :!:

 Pull that LED fitting out and see if the connection is there :!:

No Turbo, lol i wished. (year 2000)

i should also add that a few months back my diesel fill cap was REAL stiff and i turned the key so hard
that now there's a few mill worth of play in the key.

i mean you can hold the metal bit in one hand and the plastic part of the key can turn a little.

is the immobilizer signal code from the key sent via actual contact, ie down the metal of the key
or via RFID like an oyster card, or key fob for door entry systems?

i mean, how silly (but easily overlooked) if its the dam key but the car itself is fine lol

(fingers crossed)

Could it be that the ignition switch is u/s? Same thing happened to me whilst on a garage forcourt filling up. I had all dash lights on fine but the starter motor wasnt working I managed to get it going by using a cable tie to squeeze the switch which got me home. I then soldered a toggle switch in to replace it. Check it by removing the cowling and pushing/pulling (not too roughly!!!) the wires whilst turning the key in the ignition.

The pats LED should flash when the ignition is off

Check fuses 32, 33, and 34 (one or 2 of them are 5a)

If you look at the fuse box lid find the one with a ket in the symbol, (top row R/H side about 2-4 in), check that one and the 2 either side of it, the fuse box lid doesnt have a symbol printed and the fuse is a 5a, that is the fuse for the stop solenoid, starter relay and the PATS LED

Someone with a TIS can confirm, mine is playing up :x
