Heater Problems

Postby Aragorn » Wed Dec 14, 2005 2:04 am

Ive got no blower on my mk5. ive checked the fuses and cant seem to find any relays so i can only imagine there is something wrong with the blower itself?

it doesnt work on any setting...

does the dash need to come out to get into it? can u get at the wiring to ensure the fan motor is getting power before ripping the entire dash apart?

cheers

All I know is that if it's the resister behind the headlamp it usually runs on speed 3, and you can see more with the radio out... I have a wiring diagram but would have to email that as posting it on the forum doesn't work..

check the resistor first these always go also quite often the wiring burns out usually near the back of the switch

i have a haynes manual with the wiring diagrams in so thats not a problem, i'll try n get the switch out and check the wiring on it,

and i'll have a look at the resistor behind the headlight

If the resistor goes you only lose speed 1 and 2.

thats not strictly true, my mates heater only worked on no3 for since he bought the van, then it stopped working altogether, he fitted a new resistor and it works now on 1 2 & 3

mines only working atm on 1 & 3, i have got a resistor but havent fitted it yet, i'm hoping it cures it

ok update

i removed the plug from the blower and tested for voltage, nothing

so i replaced that and got the wiring diagram out for the wiring to switch and connected the 12v feed to the blower output and bingo, big spark and blower fires up

tried the 12v feed to one of the resistor outputs and got nothing

so i popped the bonnet and had a look for the resistor, and found a horrible rusted old lump of crap, it was that bad the 3 spade terminals just snapped off it when i prodded it.

i can only imagine the resistor has shorted out to the chassis and the switch has blown (one of the contacts on the switch plug was melted), i made a bypass to allow me to get full speed by connecting the 2 terminals to a rocker switch however the connections on the switch block arent very secure and i was a bit worried that they'd fall off once i started driving around so i removed it and will have to find another switch and a resistor pack

also noticed that after about 20-30secs of running the fan starts to make a kinda screechy noise which probably means the motor IS going to pack up anyway

The screeching niose is completely normal on the transit, we have had one doing it for more than 10 years, so I wouldn't say it's about to pack up! It's the bearings in the heater fan. Try kicking it, sometimes it works..........!

 I frightened my Gary to death once whilst we were driving along in the big un, the heater started screaming so I kicked it, he didn't realise it was me. He thought the banging was coming from the gearbox!!! Shut up the fan bearings a treat though, till the next time!

cant see the kicking doing much on a mk5 as the blower is right up the back of the dashboard behind the radio... :p

i'll get a new resistor and switch and hopefully get it working soon :)
