Hello Guys and Guyettes,
I thought I could go it alone, that I didn't need you.Alas I'm back on my knees looking for help.
I have a 2.5 litre diesel short wheel base with original exhaust,(the bah-humbug gremlins screwed me over again cause 1 day before xmass
and the tailpipe fell off :(
It has come away flush from the rear box. other than that it seems in good nick.Kwik fit are asking for £158 and a local private bloke wants £245,my question is should I get it welded or is that a waste of time. :?:
Can I cut the section between the first and second box so I can just add
the last section and is it worth looking in the scrappies(last time I went the scrappies dog took a real dislike to me.)
happy gorging and boozing to you all,
How much??U aving a laugh.No way.never.

welding depends on the condition of the exhaust! i'd say if your keeping the van for a few years get a new one!! :D
i only really weld exhausts when they have cracked rather than rotted through! or if i am getting shut of the car/van! 9 times out of 10 they rot from the inside out so what looks ok can be nearly gone!! :(

i forget the price but last time i did a mk5 Di exhaust we bought it from part co and fitted it ourselves! - but it was summertime!! sometimes its just as cheep to get a exhaust centre to fit it! :D

if you were to replace the rear box only you would have to cut the system anyway, if you havent got alot of money at the moement ,then you can replace just the rear section ,or find a secondhand bit of pipe with some sort of box on it and fit that! a rear section is around £60-70 from a motorfactors! :) :)

Thanks for the view mate,I'm keeping her so I shall just bite the bullet
Your spot on with the rust comment, she looks fine outside but was obviously roting inside :?
£158 for a large exhaust exhust is not bad value, looks like it belongs on a truck.still it stings a bit, thats a lot of Bombadier fine ale I won't be drinking.
Get drunk and wait up for santa then give give him a full on wedgy,
teach him to go round giving kids the impression that theres something to look forward too

.........Scooge? Happy Christmas to you too! Back to the exaust, I would have a shop around, the last (chassis cab, short) exaust we had this year was £60! Which, if it was twice as long for a van, would be £120.

Welcome back, BTW, have a look at what's in a name in non transit talk.

my van has now done 162 k on the original exhaust, has been welded up a couple of times, especialy at the week bit between flange and first box, if you are a good welder you should be able to salvage it, grind away rust from broken bit of pipe and box, if need be sleave it with a bit of tin so you have some fresh steel to weld to on yer back box. mig is by far the best method for this type of repair. got to do my mates van soon, his tail pipe dropped of at the same point, its sitting in the back of his van waiting for me to glue it back on. good luck chap, hope you get to drink more bombadier :D

:x

Bloody f!*&king barstewards,
Got screwed over rightly.
Took van to quickfitup,I thought 158 pounds was not too bad for a double box and tailpipe, guess what, went back, van still on ramp, bloodsucker says tried to remove studs and next piece of pipe "tore",I checked, this was badly rusted, asked how much for next piece of short pipe,150 pounds, yep thats right,150 pounds, price now over 300 pounds, now van is not moveable bacause exhaust is completely split.
I figure this is how it works.Give reasonable quote, then when vehicle is in,"check" remaining exhaust, then when customer comes back, vasaline
his ring, then give him/her a good financial shagging.Always had company vehicles so was wary of said "experts",thought by doing the price check thing I could go in "armed",but they got me.While I could see that the small piece of pipe was rusted and needed replacing sooner or later I don't see how a small piece of pipe could cost the same as the double box with connecting piece and tailpipe, especially as the original price included fitting and vat
Well when I need a new battery or tyres for my van or the companys van I won't be going to this shower of f!*$k heads.
sadly pro tyre don't do van exhausts anymore

that sucks, sorry to hear your woes ... if you havent paid them yet, tell them, sorry you cant afford it and get it back (if its not moveable see if someone can tow it for you) then get the exhaust and fit it yourself, its really not that hard a job

if the studs that have torn out of yours are the ones i am thinking of then you can replace them with a suitable sized nut and bolt

for those of you having box to pipe spliting problems, you need to get underneath and add the strengthening webs that ford forgot to fit between the end of the box(s) and the pipe, they always like to crack and then tear around this point, i have repaired a few of them now that have had this problem, they tear around the original weld. of course if the problem is rot then any fix is only likely to be temporary.

I wish it would have an effect, but it doesnt.......I have been telling people to give kwik$hit a miss for years cos they will try it on, but their bloody adverts on the telly get people believing in them, I think is the "a big comapny wouldnt do that" theory that people believe...
