Rear brakes locking up

Postby v8steve » Mon Dec 26, 2005 7:36 pm

HELP, Ive got a 1993 transit and the rear brakes keep locking up. Drums and pads are all ok, I think it could be the load sensing valve but I do not know what it should be set to. I've seached for info with no luck. Does anyone know the tech spec.

there should be a plate on the passenger side foot well with some info for you, but i think it was only adjustable at the garage where they can test braking percentage etc, the adjustment is done my altering the fitting position of the clamp on the spring if i remember correctly

these little valves only move a small amount and are prone to seizing, and are sodding expensive

i think i might have one kicking around for a mk3 van that i was considering using on mine, but not 100% sure

yeah like gs says it will be the load limiting valve siezes up easyly try freeing it off with a can of penitrating oil and working some movement in to it!! :? it allows more pressure to the back brakes when the body and the axle are closer!!

good fun when they sieze up tho!!

trouble is when they seize you are lucky if
a) you can un-stick it
and
b) it doesnt go again shortly afterwards :(

the one i got to work again i had to take off and use an airline on it, alternating blocking outlets and then working it backwards and forwards then with releasing agent in it, and then dry and then with brake fluid, the main problem is it moves so bloddy little its a pain.

they do say that those vans that live in areas with speed bumps are less prone to this as the valve gets exercised regualirly :P

so speed bumps are a good thing!!
also if a van never carries much weight for years then gets a journey with a heavy load that can do it too!!! :(

i think the load sensing valve could be the problem with my dads van as it is jacked up at the back a lot higher than an ordinary van it is obviously streched in which case it thinks the vans empty even though its fully loaded :? so is this the reason there is no back brakes on his van :?: it had new wheel cylinders new drums new shoes new cables and pipes back in september this year so it isnt any of these ?? anyone suggest anything :?: :?: only thing i can think of is to make a bracket up to lower the valve :?:

yes, any adjustment in normal ride hieght will require the LAV to be reset accordingly

EDIT! ...... no not a bracket lol, get the clamp on the lower arm of the spring adjusted, this only fails if some berk has cut the spring after initial adjustment, even if they have adding a new piece and welding it should be ok

mate i reckon you've hit the nail on the head!! measure his raised van against your standard one and make an extention bracket that size!!
but i would make it adjustable incase you measure wrong  cos like GS says your only talking a small amount of movement!!! :D
