Mk2 front lwb/swb axle swap

Postby Luke » Tue Apr 05, 2005 8:04 pm

ok chaps and fred  quick question!! :D

I can get a front axle from a mk2 lwb single rear wheel (6stud)

will the standard hubs swap with it to convert it from 6 stud to 5 stud??
without splitting it at the kingpins??? ie swap it by undoing the 5 bolts with tab washers on??
and can i keep the brake discs and calipers from the lwb axle???

I will have to give this one some thought, one thing though. The Long Wheel Base are most commonly Twin Wheel, and six stud, though sometimes single wheel and therefore five stud. I don't think that even the LWB single wheel had six studs, what did you mean?

Its quite a rare one but its a 6 stud front axle that fits single wheel style wheels (the ones without a massive offset)!!
i presume its a different width to a normal one to account for the wheels!!

You got me there, I always thought that htey just ran ordinary single wheel five studs, never seen them (6 stud) on the Mk 2 as an option.

Ok i'll answer my own question!!!

Yes you can!!!* :D

* providing the front wheel bearings on the mk1 and mk2 are the same!!
They seem ok though!!

I'd even not be suprised if you can convert a twin wheel to 5 stud using the same method!! although the 4pot brakes might get in the way!! :? ill have to look into that one, as if they didn't it would also be a good brake upgrade!! (for when i fit a 24V cossy!!  )

Im also confident that the front hubs can be modded to accept different PCD's as in this thread!!! 8)

Why not just go Mk2/3 in the short term, if only to tide you over til the ifs. We put a Mk2 on our Mk1, complete with disc brakes. It just bolted straight up, with a little change to the brake pipes, at least on the LWB TW, not sure about the SWB cos wev'e never done anything like this on one.

You got me thinking there!! i think my mk1 axle was actually off a mk2 :?
It has disk brakes!! On a 1971 diesel 4108(origanally) would that be disks or drums??

but any way swap is done and im good for a few more mot's yet!! :D

Ya beat me to it Luke! I would go the whole axle, then the bearings will be easier to find. But at least Makr's shouldn't have too much kingpin wear!
