Tow bar wiring for my 1995 smiley

Postby transit jono » Tue Jan 17, 2006 9:59 am

Can anyone give me the right colours to connect my tow bar wiring into my 1995 Hallmark smiley?I towed my new 1600e from Western-Supermere to West London, only to find at the last minute the wiring had been removed from the rear o/side light  .
It would be great if someone could help and save me getting the auto electric guy out.
Thanks Jono

on that year you should find a connector in the n/s rear corner for the trailer wiring:
connection - colour - trailer wiring plug pin no.
n/s stop light - violet - 6
o/s stop light - violet/orange - 8 at rear light colour is violet/black
n/s sidelight - orange/white - 7
o/s sidelight - orange/blue - 5 at rear light colour is orange
n/s indicator - blue - 1
o/s indicator - blue/red - 4
fog light - violet/yellow

Thanks for the info. Are you saying that Ford have supplied sockets on the wiring loom to plug my trailer wiring straight into? The existing wiring(when i bought the van) was wiried into the o/side rear light then cut away,i tried to follow the colour coding but was unable to.

yes, from 1995 onwards ford fitted a socket for towbar wiring to plug into
if yours is from the second half of 95 it should have the socket.

Madvanman, I have a pre 1995 (Mk4) so without the connector, but I like the idea. Do you know if it is a standard connector or a Ford special? I wouldnt mind soldering a connector into my loom to connect my towbar to, just in case I pull it off again in the future. If I make it the same type as a smiley then it would be "standard" :)

Yeah they all had them it was standard in the loom on the Mk5, dunno about yours but maybe you could cut one out of a later van and fit it to yours!

Good idea, but what do I plug into it? Hence my question, is it a standard connector :?

not all of the mk5s, ive just cut up a '96 hicube for spares and it didnt have it  but my '95 does.

The connector is for a ford option loom which is pre wired to the trailer socket, i dont know if it is a standard plug and i cant check at the moment as my van has most of another transit inside it :) (hicube full to capacity)

I presume the plug is on the inside of the van at the back on the passenger side? My 98 should have one then?

I may be getting to the bottom of this - or just getting more confused. I was reading my Haynes manual last night (as you do...) and found that the 1992-1995 wiring diagram shows the Trailer Socket. I looked on the 1995-2000 Diagram and it was missing! :?

The next obvious thing to do is to look at my loom to see if I actually have the plug there already! I will do so tomorrow...

Well if my Haynes manual was to be believed I would have one, but....

Image

I haven't!!

So I will solder some kind of 7 pin plug and socket combination into the loom to hook up my towbar wiring. Makes you wonder how Ford decided on which van had a plug and which didn't :?
