Transit revving like a mad thing from start-up & won't s

Postby demonloop » Tue Jan 24, 2006 9:37 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and looking for some help.

I bought an '84 2.5 TD model

When I start it up it goes to full revs, no throttle response ans won't stop with the key, I have to dump it into gear to stop it!!

Any ideas whats wrong?

Do you know what year van the engine was taking from? Could be the pump or stop solenoid.

I'm not really sure, it is not the original engine?

I know it has a Lucas EPIC engine management system and an electronic pump......

Does it look like the one in the middle or the far left?

Pretty sure they didn't do a turbo untill '91 and not the EPIC management untill later.
Has the van always done this or just started doing it recently?
I think we can assume the engine has been changed (unless you meant '94  ) and I'd start by checking the conversion was done right. If it doesn't stop then check the fuel stop solenoid has been connected. If it's been converted to EPIC check the 'fly by wire' throttle has been put in right.

Might be valve stem oil seals allowing oil to seep down when standing, once it's running on the oil it doesn't like to stop.

Disconnect the fuel pump stop solenoid and start it, if it runs at max rpm the chances are it's on oil, has the level gone down at all?

wont these "run away" if you get an air intake leak like some of the others, or does the EPIC system stop this ?

 turbo di in 84  dont think so and epic as well no no! the only chance you would of haveing a turbo di them days was if it was converted by turbo technics etc ! its oviously been fitted from a later smiley, if you look down on the top of the head behind the top radiator hose you will see what year the head was built! :) and also down by the dipstick on the block this will tell you when the block was built ,they are normaly near the same within a few months!
this mabe a ecu problem or electric throttle pedal maybe at falt! :?

you could get a turbo di on the first mk3's 86-91 but it didnt have the epic system and it was very very very rare my dad was one of the lucky few who had one he had a cancelled order utility van :) however a turbo di in 84 no way unless like mark says conversion and i think the epic system came in 91/92

84 will definately be a Mk2, it depends when in 84 if it was a phase1 or phase2. The regular Di was introduced in 84, with the facelift. There was no TDi in the Mk2, so it's obviously a retro fitted engine. As long ast it's a cable pump TDi, it should be OK, but I know they are dependant on an ECU, has it got one of these? If not that could be the problem, or even if it has that could be the problem!
