Sounds like a knacked power steering pump! Have you checked the fluid level?

either that or the pipes might have split causing fluid loss the pipes on smileys used to rot causing the same effects as you describe

Low power steering fluid level with the engine running would be the easy thing to suggest, a small metal pipe has been known to corrode and allow oil to leak out.

If thats OK, it could be a week pressure relief valve inside the pump....not a common defect though.

It's also worth making sure the bottom ball joints aren't worn out too and tire pressures are in spec.

i think the guys have covered everyhing i could think off, except maybe a loose steering rack, but i would suspect that you would feel that (and worn ball joints) when driving straight as well.
