Box Or Clutch ? or maybe both !

Postby Andy » Sat Feb 04, 2006 11:38 pm

1988 Chassis cab - started life as petrol now diesel of unknown age! I wil post a picture of the engine at some point for someone to identify.
Anyway van is undergoing rust remedy treatment at the moment so the engine and gearbox are out.
When I bought the van and drove it home the gearbox was happy to go up the gears but required speed matching to go down the gearbox (if you know what I mean). Its an MT75 with evidence of leaking oil around the central seal. The engine is covered in oil all over the rear face and behind the flywheel. It looks like it is coming from the rocker cover gasket which is clearly Knackered. That said I have not removed the clutch to get a better look.
Anyway do you reckon the gear selection problem is the clutch or gearbox?
I got a new clutch on ebay -£21.00 - hope its the right one - 267mm.
But should I change the box aswell. They are not quite as plentifull up here in Scotland !!

for diesal engine types look here http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2550
check your old clutch to see if it has oil contamintion that may have caused a problem with the gearchange...if it still do it when put in the van then its new gearbox time :(

Could be clutch drag or,maybe more likely (espicially if the box went in gear from a standstill OK) its the synchro on the way out (unusual for them all to go though) I'd be inclined to see what happens with the new clutch.

the mt75 is a strange box ,you can have a exelent one thats smooth and give no problems or you get a notchy one! sometimes a clutch will help abit! ,not shure about the clutch size mate you will have to take it off and have alook. 242mm springs to mind! :)

Mine was a pig to change down and get into first when standing still, new cable and ratchet soon sorted that (of course it blew up 2 weeks later but i can't blame the clutch cable for that can i)

I would think that your change down from 5 to 4 is ok? but 4-3 and 3-2 is a pain? if so then thats almost certainly the synchros, if its a pain in all gears then probably a new clutch will sort it.

Mine was sometimes a pain to get into 1st but other than that it was smooth as silk, its not a pain at the mo cos its sat on axles stands with no propshaft

I'll top it up with oil and give it a go with the new clutch - maybe a new cable aswell.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks for the info.
