which air filter

Postby crazyscoot » Wed Feb 08, 2006 10:06 pm

Anybody know of a performance air filter for my smiley 2.5TD. I have found one that connects straight onto the turbo inlet but what do i do about the rocker cover cap/breather which also connects to the air box via a small bore pipe. I notice that oil vapor collects in the cap which would destroy a filter.

i have a cone filter on mine at the mo it is bolted on the rubber pipe that comes off the airbox seems to be very effective done 250 miles today and only used £15 of fuel  and gives it an excellent whistle 8)

what did you do with the oil filler cap? have you blocked it?

i dont know what vehicle it came from it is a pipercross filter and was given to me by a mate i will see what i can find out from him the oil filler dont need to be blocked where i fitted it as it went straight on where the hose meets the airbox so theres no need to modify anything just means i have got a electrical sensor that is disconnected

Hiya guys, this is the airfilter i had on mine , it is a universal filter , my advise is if yer gonna get one spend as much as you can afford ie a K&N or Pipercross like Highcube has got , if you get a cheap one like i got which was 30 quid , they just dont take in the air well enough , i fitted mine straight on to the air sensor as you can see in the pic , not sure if the setup is different on a diesel ???

I have since taken it off and gone back to the original airbox and the van performs much better , so best to spend yer money on a good filter , probably looking at about 70 - 90 quid or try using a K&N panel filter to replace the one in yer airbox .

Hope this helps

you chaps sure you are getting any gains? anyone dynoed their motor after fitting a filter, unlike a petrol engine which requires a metered air/fuel mix, a diesel requires a metered amount of fuel at the firing point, heat to ignite fuel is generated by commpressing air so hard that it gets hot enought to ignite the fuel, so as long as there is a plentyful supply of air from a clean standard filter (there is a limit to how much air your engine can compress) on a healthy (compression wise) motor you probably wont notice any gains, other than a cool induction noise! of course if you have a dirty old filter you will notice a slight tail off but we are talking quite old tech lumps here, i have never realy been a fan of cone type filters, great for crusing the one way system in a w*** fiesta but i like to keep the crap out of my engine!

useless bit of info time :P ...... K&N make a flat rectangular type which replaces the original paper filter inside the air box .... you'll also find it listed under Volvo 480  .... how do i know this ? ... because i also have a volvo 480 with one of these K&N filters fitted

Cheers lads, all very interesting to read. Sounds like a 50/50 split. Dont know wheat to do now but what i did have in mind was maybe a forced induction system. I'm no expert in mechanics and physics but what someone said earlier has put me off. If i feed the motor with more air, then surely i also need to put in more fuel? or is this a petrol theroy? Sorry forgot to say mine is a 2.5TD. Can the pump be wound up a bit in order to cope with the extra air? How can i tell if i'm about to cause major damage?

you have hit the nail on the head! should have put in my earlier post that the only easy way for more go in a diesel (forgetting expensive ecu's and dfferent cam profiles) is... loads more fuel at the firing point, as yours is allready turboed you are limited by boost pressure, if the boost pressure can be altered you will see gains but i would be supprised if you saw any gains by an air filter or forced air. ever watched tractor pulling or truck racing? those things vurtualy tip fuel into the cylinders, hence all the black smoke. down sides are emmisions and fuel economy. i would have thought a 100 ps tranny was more than adequate, but hey ho. one last thing, i am sure from test on the zzr1100 in the 90's that the forced air was ineffective untill speeds rose over 150mph, dynos were unable to give a tru reading of bhp without some means of providing a force 10 plus blast of air! anyone own a 150 mph tranny?!

You want more power from your diesel engine?
LPG/Propane/Hydrogen injection is the way to go! It's massive in the US for their huge diesel pickups. Check out this review:
http://www.difflock.com/lpg/Arun-diesel.shtml
I've been experimenting in very crude way but the results have so far been 'inconclusive' :? . It could be because I only had a can of butane to hand or that I had no real way of knowing how much gas I was adding :P
From everything that I've read it seems there really are big gains to be made in performance or economy (not both at the same time :P ) and emmisions.
I'm still experimenting.
