Where is all this oil coming from !

Postby Andy » Thu Feb 09, 2006 8:40 pm

My non banana 89 2.5di is covered in oil making it difficult to find the source - where is the most common source of leaks?

Lots of oil especially on the exhaust side - I'll be doin the rocker cover and sump gasket as a matter of course but if you can advise of any other known bad spots

cheers

Could it be coming out of the oil PC valve? or did you ever forget to put the filler cap back on and drive for a bit (ya might have remembered that one)

If its all over the place then the rocker cover is usually the biggest culprit, just make sure the engine is not breathing heavy or the breather blocked before you change the gasket, otherwise you will blow the gasket straight out again.

the most common leak on any motor is the rocker cover
if like the di its pressed steel ,they get over tightened and this kills the sealing gasket . when i rebuilt mine last week end i looked at the rocker cover and it was distorted around each bolt hole where it had been over tightend
couple of mins with a hammer and dolly and the mateing surfaces were true or just a little hollow so they compress square

It's the Pressure Control Valve, on the pinto it's just above the passenger side engine mount in the block, has a big pipe going into it, if it pops out it allows the oil to splatter out of the block (not p*ss) all over that side of the engine bay.

Oh, and while I was under the bonnet of me diesel (early, lucas pump) I noticed there was quite a bit of oil about too, coming from the rocker cover joint, quite normal I thought!

Oh, I would have called it the 'crankcase pressure valve', different areas different descriptions I suppose..

Anyhow I wasnt aware that the Di had one, I think its just the breather on the top of the oil filler cap..

Cant find one on the TIS disk anyhow..

Off to the pub now, its quiz time :D

if there isn't one on the Di, that'll be why I can't find one! Now you mention it, there is a breather on the oil filler.

As with the other replies i'd see how you get on once you've done the rocker cover gasket - ours was pishing oil & we found the bolts really loose on the rocker cover and it's been OK since we tightened them - still a bit leaky but we'll change the gasket soon anyway.

Is that the replacable O ring between the pump and the block or actually inside the sealed pump? It's a bit late since I've replaced the whole pump now :P Oh well it stopped leaking anyway!
