Postby ____SNAKE____ » Sun Feb 12, 2006 12:38 pm

Hi there Guys .. i want to change the radaitor cooling fan .
My van is a 1992 2.5 DI (not bananna)
Van takes ages to heat up and i would like to put an electric fan in , i cant see any problems here but does anyone have any idea as th what thermostat housing will fit the transit with the sender unit on it ? ( switch to turn on fan ).
Thank you for any replies

I'd fix the reason why it takes so long to warm up rather than messing around doing all of that!

Hi again ..amybe i have worded this wrong .
The van heats up ok in a normal time ..thermostat is fine ect.
Right i have a diesel car with an electric fan and it gets to its norm opperating temp a lot quicker due to the fan not running when it aint needed.
It was -9c the other week up here in glasgow ..and i thought hell with the wind factor of the fan it would be like -30c around engine thus its got to take it longer to get to best operating temp .
Thats when i had the tought of changing it ...surely this can only be a good moove.
I will time the engine and see how long it takes to get to norm temp with fan and repeat test without fan ... i recon there will be a fair differance .
What ya think ?
Thanks.

Good idea i think. several reasons, you could work under the bonnet with the engine running without risk of cutting your hands off and we all know when your under the bonnet with the engine running how dam cold it is with that great fan spinning away! Brruuu

i have an electric fan on my hi-cube (pre banana di) it hasnt made any noticeble diference to the warming up time. ive noticed that the mk3's ive had the diesels have recirc. heaters probably due to the time it takes for the engine to warm up.

the turbo di's have an open bladed fan where as the bannana's tend to have the closed blade fan :? only knew this when the blue hicube had a cambelt done and the so called ford mechanic broke the fan and it took a week or so to get a new one

it's not just the themocoupler in your present fan thats bo**oxed is it ?

before you start it from cold pop the bonnet and see if the fan spins freely, if it's not the thermocoupler is naffed, then it wll take ages to warm up.

if you do decide to fit electric fans - the sierra twin cams have a similar sized radiator - might even be the same!! im sure with a bit of modfication you could get the twin electric fans of them to fit!!!

sounds more like the viscouse has seized to me, as stated the fan should spin freely untill the engine in hot, in fact with the engine idling you should be able to stop the fan with your hand (DO NOT try this just in case the fan is seized), when cold (and the viscouse not engaged) the fan is running so slow it hardly draws any air through the rad.

thats it............ thermo viscous, thermo coupler is used in gas fires n stuff, at least bortaf knew what i meant.

forgot to say , ford changed the thread on the fan..e.g. left hand/right handed at some time but i can't remember when.
a strap or chain type oil filter remover is handy to grip the waterpump pulley with if you do come to change one.
