My van's got hiccups!

Postby stevew » Thu Feb 16, 2006 1:09 pm

Hi all,
For the last few weeks my van has been suffering from hiccups!
It only does it at idle and usually nly after it's warmed up. The engine will sundenly rev hard as though someone has blipped the throttle (although blipping the throttle cannot produce such a strong effect). The effect is limited to a few (or maybe only one I can't tell) revolutions at a time.
My thougts are:
1) a sensor on the engine has become intermitent causing excessive fuelling.
2) the engine is sucking oil in somehow
3) the pump is failing!

The engine management light does not come on.
Any ideas?

Could the air filter box sensor cause this :?: I know when it tells the ecu its cold it will compensate by adding more fuel :?: thoughts are that it may be giving a screwed up message to the ecu for a second or so causing you engine to rev up. Dont really know but maybe a thought :?: Could try unpluging it from the filterbox and see what happens. Let us know as i'd be interested.

Yep that was my first thought, the air temp sensor on my van has a dodgy connector.
Why can't I buy a fault code reader for the EPIC system?
Bah!

Fixed!

Mark, yes I could solder wires onto the sensor and join them diredtly to the loom but it wouldn't be very nice. I just need to get to scrappie and cut the connector off a transit.

Anyway I think (fingers crossed) I have fixed this issue.
It was stupid really, these things hardly ever happen spontaneously and the same was true for me. A few weeks back I took off part of the inlet manifold to check it for oil deposits (it was horribly coated :( ) and to do this I disconnected all the sensors and actuators from the top of the engine. I put it back and I thougth I'd checked them all for corrosion. Today, whilst driving west on the M42 the engine management light came on and the power went away. I stopped got under the bonnet and reseated all the connectors. All fixed! :D So I don't know exactly which one was the culprit.
