looks like the exhaust gas reserculating system (EGR)has been removed there will be a small plate with 2 bolts through in the ehxaust manifold near the back to close the other end of it it will run without it but i dont know how easy it will be to get it through the test

The flap has been wired up .Looks a bit horrible like that . but its perfectly ok leave it like that l .Would suggest you trawl through the forum . these mods. have all been discussed before.
These Mods do work very well indeed Oh by the way thats the throttle butterfly that wired up , the links get worn and then it falls off stops the car revving up Diesels dont need a throttle they use the pump to regulate engine speed . :D If i am not mistaken the test is for Black smoke and this mod doesn't effect it . If we get into a debate on this My friend Howard is an MOT tester at a Ford garage I will ask him,his veiws on this and what the ministry say !
the other thing is put the links back on and take out butterfly . my son did a far neater job of fastening it up on his 2.5
I should know better at my age !!!!!

From what i can see this is the type where the egr and the egr disc is on the drivers side of the engine as apposed to the banana which is on the passenger side . It looks to me that all that has been done is that the butterfly air inlet which would have had a rod to the fuelpump so as to increase air intake with more acceleration and viceversa , has been fixed in the open position, but as far as i can see thats all. Is it causing any problems? And what year is the van? Iam not sure but i dont think you have the plastic vacuum control valve as with the banana , i think one of the pipes coming off the egr valve (disc in picture) goes directly to the air inlet manifold ,but i cant remember where the other one goes.

I forgot to say , also check the year of the engine, which should be cast into the block under the top hose, as it might not be the original.
