started to smoke after a mettalic rattle.

So here is the situation , i am just going down the sliproad 45/50 when i look in the mirror clouds of bluey/grey smoke then what sound s like a mettalic rattle, this stopped, pulled off next exit and limped home.( the van is a 96 120 swb diesel ) I pulled the bonnet and started the van still firing on 4 doesnt sound to rattley on tickover no smoke . So take it back down the road no smoke but as soon as i put any real load on the van the smoke comes back has anyone got any ideas or has this happened to anyone before . ALL levels are good oil/ water etc.
i,m stumped.

sounds like a small hole in a piston, or a broken ring on a piston or could be a valve seating problem, I would be checking for any parts that may have been sucked into the intake, then start looking internal for a bit that has broken off.

Just a thought , could it be water in the fuel filter ,try changing the filter or possibly air getting into the fuel system . Worth a check. when you change the filter , before you replace it take the pipe which comes of the filter and goes to pump and put it in a can of diesel somewhere secure under the bonnet , make it so fuel isnt splashing out but air must be able to get in top of can ie a loose rag perhaps with a short tube through it as you dont want a vacuum in the can preventing the free flow of fuel . Then Start it up , (it may need a bleed) and take it for a drive (make sure also that the can you use is clear of bits as you have bypassed the filter .Depending on the results of this as to eliminate water or clogging of filter Plus eliminatig the problem of air in system ,all except from your can onwards any way, So it doesnt exclude the pump or the fuel pipe where it joins to the pump. As i say this is only a suggestion , But i always think it is a good idea to eliminate simple possibilities before any thing else ,Hope this will be of some use any way .

HI GUYS
Thanks for the input ,had the van recovered to a transit specialist and this is what they came up with. upon removing the rocker cover they found several of the rocker shaft bolts loose , that was the mettalic noise. as a direct result of this the oil was drenching the rockers instead of spraying the rockers and excess oil was then finding it,s way into the cylinders via the valve guides and this was the cause of the smoke. So i have since asked the guy,s to service the van while they have it also they are going to uprate the injectors for a little more oomph. Price wise it is good
i have had a new rockershaft + bolts t/belt oils etc inc recovery and delivery back to my home for under £300.00

I should add, this car yard was so full you would have trouble parking a push bike in there.

Yards that are full need to move some stock so some good deals can be had.

They had AU$17,995.00 on it, I offered him AU$13,000.00 and told him I would be leaving Brisbane around 10 a.m. the following day.

I was a drink with my youngest son when my mobile rang, the yard said ok provided I paid the on-road costs, AU$330.00. Told him to have it ready by 1030 a.m. as that was how long it would take me to get from the bank to the yard. 10 minutes filling in the transfer papers and I was gone, heading north for the a bit over 1,000 kilometers.
