SWITCHING FROM PETROL TO LPG ?? TRANSIT MK6

Postby manxtransit » Thu Jun 04, 2009 7:55 am

Just a quick question, I have just bought a 2002 transit with the factory lpg system fitted.

Starts and runs fine, if I drive for about 5 mins and then press the lpg switch after a
couple of secs van will cut out (as though it has run out of fuel) It will then pick up again after about 5-6 secs and the green lpg light (under the lpg fuel guage) will flash about every 3 secs.

Is it then running on lpg or has it tried to switch to lpg and then gone back to petrol, hence the cut out and then picking up again?

Thanks for any help :D

it should not do this ,if its a factory conversion it will automaticly go over to gas unless you switch it over! you have a problem its not going onto gas by the sounds of it!

Whats the correct procedure then?
Should I just start it with the lpg switch on and then the van will switch from petrol to lpg when it can?
Or should you start it on petrol and then when warmed up press the lpg switch and it will switch onto lpg?
What should the green light under the lpg guage be doing? Staying on or flashing?
]One other thought I have just had is the lpg guage shows full , as high as it can go, maybe the sender or the guage is faulty and there is no lpg in tank?? Is there a way to check the sender and guage?
Sorry for all the questions :D

the van will start on petrol and when its ready it will automatic go over to lpg, unless its not a factory conversion, the way to tell if its factory is the dash ,you should have a rev counter and the petrol gauge does lpg and petrol! also the filler will be on the oposite side to the petrol filler cap! also the door stickers will have the duel fuel logo on them!

Don't the LPG MK6s have a gas gauge in place of the temperature gauge :?:

yes there is 2 fuel guages, 1 on the far right for petrol and 1 on far left for lpg, this is the 1 that is reading maximum, need to find out if it is reading correct or is faulty

Maybe water in the LPG evaporator This is located at the lowest point in the LPG system and any water in the system will collect here, reducing the efficiency of the evaporator

Not strickley true on the mk6's, yes you can start with the lpg switched on and it will start and run on petrol until warmed up but you can also switch the lpg off and run solely on petrol and switch on and off of lpg as required

Has the lpg system ever been serviced, both filters, pressures set at both stages etc :?:

I always start/leave the LPG on (light on the switch) and it will move over to LPG when it good and ready, about 45 secs i suppose.

As far as i can tell, the flashing green light (which is under the LPG tank gauge, which has replaced the TEMP gauge) is a sign that the LPG is on call and awaiting (auto) switch over once temp is reached.
You ( i can anyway..) hear a relay or similar, click over (some times twice) and green then stays permanently on.

If you worry about LPG guage being faulty, why don't you just fill it right up to check :? It will go back to petrol automatically when LPG runs out. I get a miserable 150 miles from a tank (but have a leak to sort) so thats a starting point of expected milage from a tank full.

A word of caution - my petrol tank has shown over 1/4 full, and still run out of petrol.. :x

Now sorted guys :D

Went and filled the lpg, took 48ltrs

So the guage or sender unit is faulty as it certainly wasnt full! It now switches over fine and the green light under the guage stays on permanently , doesnt flash.

Thanks for all the suggestions :D

Also, how easy is it to service the lpg side , ie change any filters, and where can they be purchased from?
