petrol leak

Postby Wolfie » Wed Mar 22, 2006 1:15 pm

is getting past the seal on the filler cap,is a new cap so am thinking pressure build up??? where is the vent/breath hole????

have a breather coming off the sender unit but that does back into the filler neck.

is a bottom filling tank which will shoot petrol all over yer leg if you put it in to fast (comes straight back up the above breather and jet propells it out)

What model and year is this? (sorry if you have posted this elsewhere, but it helps to keep the details in the same thread). Has it always done it? We have a chassis cab that has has always chucked out petrol, it had the right tank with a filler kneck coming up to the body. If you don't keep the pump half way out, it chucks it back at you.

My last Transit did this when filling...complain to the petrol pump cashier as they set the pumps up to fill for a set amount of time together with a set amount of fuel and the test is done vertically into a huge tank so any cars/vans that have a cranked fill neck will back up due to speed of the pumps...or do as Fred says hold it half way out but again you will still get a wet foot sometimes due to the amount of fuel getting chucked out of the pump....I actually realised that my local petrol station had certain pumps that were faster than others so I ended up avoiding the ones that always backed up on me.

The Breather pipe "should" be connected to the top of the fill neck going back to the tank assuming one was ever fitted, a non vented filler cap will cause this problem or conversely a vented cap when you need a Non vented one. You may simply find that the rubber seal is done for...new filler cap unfortunately as the rubber seals aren't sold anymore.
As far as I am aware the only way to know which should be fitted (vented or non vented) is to read the Fords handbook (not the Haynes manual).

Sinature! Doh! I assume it's a panel van type then. if it was hotter i would say expension, but it's freezing at the moment so that can't be it.

Sorry about that, it's the SWB bit that through me! So do you have a filler kneck tha comes from the tank? I know it will be behind the bodywork. The chassis cab tank filler comes out of the top, the van filler comes out of the back of the tank. Just wondered if you had the right tank, one of our chassis has, but you never know what life has thrown at em!

Sound like you have a van petrol tank, I don't know if that is relevant. I can't think where the pressure is coming from, unless it's always been like it.

Can't say I have ever seen anything like that on a Mk2. It's dark now but I will have alook the spare tanks later, when it's light.

erm, you mean 86-90, unless of course you are talking build year.

did some checking and some crawling under the van got none of the funnel things.

it is a van tank fred, is also supposed to have a vented cap but it was too cold and dark to check last night, so that is my job tonight.
