Dana 60 rear & 44 front with divorced transfer box. Go anywhere then!
Lift it a bit and put on some decent AT boots.

All you'd need after that is a proper sized engine and Gbox to match

Nice idea, in fact the perfect solution!
However I doubt my skills and wallet would stretch that far! ;)

you might want to look at a mk8 axle if you have the wheels tucked under a long way on a camper, the axle is wider, and its easy to fit an LSD to help you with traction on your trips

Nice idea BJ, though I want to retain my MK2s mot exemption, useful if I'm away beyond a year ;)

I can fit something that was manufactured 10 years after the mark ceased so that limits me to around '96.

In place of an LSD a little handbrake helps ;)

Well, yes, there's that.

Would a mk8 rear fit my chassis? How would I get a MK8 stub axle to fit an old I beam?

the axle came put in 97, but wasn't used in the transit till 2014, most people wouldn't know the difference between the axles, and anyway, i thought you could fit like for like, so a solid transit 5 stud axle is a solid transit 5 stud axle, year is irrelevant

It's not that hard to make it fit, even if you have to clean all the original fittings off the tube and add what fittings you need to fit your chassis.
They're all basically just a set of tubes, sticking out a centre housing.

And if your wanting to fit Mk8 hubs to your current beam axle Stubbs that may be a bit more akward

But thinking this conversation should be moved to its own thread? as it's an interesting subject that has scope for further pondering.

i'm hoping to fit mk8 axles to both my mk6's, and will check measurements to see if one will fit my mk1 fire truck to give better ratios, LSD's from america are cheap, new or used

Is it aftermarket or genuine?

Hi Airthies it’s a genuine Ford from dealership they tell me it’s a3.73 just want to be sure when it was changed from a 3.1 every thing worked apart from the Cruise control it worked for about 10 miles and if something is done to the electrics it will work again for a few miles as I am lost on the computer side of things I’ve had it to a guy off Facebook who fits Cruise control to mk8 s and he as reset the axle ratio but with not been sure on correct one so far it will work in upto 5 th gear but not in 6th .

Hi guys does anyone know if a mk8 axle will fit inside a mk7. Are the spring plates, shock mounts, input coupling etc comparable?

Mk8 rear axle is almost a direct bolt in to a Mk7 (single wheel). I put one into my 3.2L camper van to change from the 4.1 diff ratio to 3.15, which in my opinion is perfect ratio for it. Spring width, and alignment hole are 1:1 same. Driveshaft bolts straight in, it uses the same american 4.25" bolt pattern with 2" center bore. The axle I used was with code BK31-4001-AAF you can tell the ratio by the last 3 letters, Axx = 3.15, Bxx = 3.31, Cxx = 3.55 and so on. Based on what I have seen from american transit axles, is they use different rear brake calipers. This transit axle is a Ford 9.75" design, and you can easily find many different styles of limited slip diff for it.

There are a few things to note when doing the swap:
1. The axle is about 17mm wider per side than the original, so your rear wheels will be flush with arches. Make sure your bump stops are there, or you might run into trouble.
2. Mk8 has different thread pitch for wheel nuts, M14x1.5 instead of M14x2.0. You will most likely need aluminium wheels, as I wasnt able to find M14x1.5 thread "washer nuts".
3. Mk8 axle has 308mm rear brakes, so you will also need the brake calipers, pipes and hoses complete. Mk7 discs and calipers wont fit.
4. The Mk8 brake hose from axle to body is direct bolt in and can be used as is.
5. To make life easier, use the old Mk7 ABS sensors, they are a direct bolt-in fit and you wont have to deal with any wiring related stuff. (both axles use 48 tooth trigger wheels)
6. Mk7 handbrake cables fit directly to Mk8 calipers. No adapters or fabrication needed.
7. Mk7 shocks can be used, but you need to fabricate a spacer for the lower shock mount. Mk7 has 40mm width and Mk8 uses 48mm width lower mount, so something with 8mm thickness and 12mm hole is needed. I made one from 8mm aluminium plate by drilling a 12mm hole to it.

I hope you guys find my information useful.
