Mystery vacuum pipe and EGR problem

Postby Davedownhill » Mon Apr 03, 2006 12:09 am

Hello all, first post from me! I've got a 1993 190 Custom TD with EPIC and was wondering about sorting my EGR valve which has been sticking... Don't want to blank/disconnect it if I can help it as I've heard this isn't good as it confuses the ECU.

Also I was looking at it today and could only find one vacuum line to the valve itself but there was another line coming from the ECU which was not connected and just lying against the manifold- any ideas what this is and if it should be connected anywhere?

Now the really stupid question- where is the drain plug for the fuel filter- its not very easy to get to and I could only find a sensor connection underneath?!?!

The drain plug on the fuel filter is the sensor, you need to disconnect the wire then unscrew the sensor a few turns.

EGR Valve

Postby Aquanaut » Mon Apr 10, 2006 5:32 pm

Had my tranny (1999, 2.5di) in to ford garage last week for set of injectors.
First thing the old mechanic done was to remove the link from the Injector Pump and Tie Fully Open the EGR Valve.

He said he does it as standard on all older transits and recons the EGR valve is a load of rubbish, (This is from a Ford Garage) and is no longer fitted on modern Transits.

He said the emissions will not be effected, other than a very slightly louder drone in the engine.
It seems to make a better grunt on my engine anyhow.
Hope this helps.

He's talking a load of crud then m8, currently ALL diesel engines in the entire Ford range have EGR, and most petrols have it too for that matter.

disconnection of the EGR in that manner is not a modification published by FMC and is no real subsitute for correct valve clearences and pump settings, but if it works for you i'm all smiles

As EGR is supposed to be the best means of NOx control available,
I'm sure the mechanic meant that the EGR setup (Valve layout and Link to Injector Pump) as used on the older transit was no longer used.
I don't have a new model transit so I can't see how it does the Emissions Recirc control.

I must investigate what effect the air intake fvalve "full open" will have on NOx emissions.
I don't think that Ford would ever issue any written statement advising this modification to the EGR valve considering the EU regulations are getting tighter, the'd be crusified.
