ldv convoy td ex police

Postby gateshead » Wed Apr 05, 2006 2:45 pm

Hi i own an ex police ldv convoy td twin wheel swb. Everyone puts their seat belts on or mobiles down when I drive around Its great :D It is fitted with the 85ps td transit engine i think but it woont rev above 3000 revs max, i can only get it to rev up to 2500 revs say in 2nd or 3rd and flat out down hill your lucky if you can pass 55mph. the engine note also sounds like it changes as you go up the rev range sort of tappety. Surely this cant be right as i bought it thinking it would be a flying machine as i was told these engines are excellent . It will pull all day up hills but never goes past 30 as it will not rev and i find it needs a lot of revs to pull away otherwise it goes all jerky .Ihave changed all oils and filters new battery etc but never looked at cambelt .mot guy said it sounded like pump timing was out but I havnt got a clue. any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

mate unfortunaltly you need to take it to a ldv agent i think , :? i knoe it has the ford engine i would also of thourt it will be more like the 100ps engine if its twin wheel!
i dont know if fords can plug it in for you , its running the epic injection sytem so the engine is all transit but daf must have the same diagnostic equipment

what does it sound like ?
i just wonder if the baffels have colapsed and its stopping it breathing right
i know the police ldv,s are reasonably quick
does the noises from the engine get loud and bangy (technical term ) as the revs build and then level just befor it gets to max revs ?

an easy way to test would be to loosen the exhaust at a the manifold joint and see if it will rev better but do it some place that wont disturb the locals

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

I have changed the fuel filter and air/oil and even added some redex injection cleaner at last fill up but has made no difference however i did get the tail pipe welded for mot but it had snapped past rear silencer just before it comes out under sliding door . How would i know if baffles had collapsed?
How can i tell if it is 100 ps engine is it stamped somewhere on engine?
when i turn on ignition 3 lights light up engine /oil /temp and then they go out as soon as engine fires up ,engine statrts first time every time and no smoke. anyone know location of ecu?

I think 100ps_drw_hicube is right it's gone into limp home mode and the only 2 engines of the Di range they used was the 76ps non turbo and the 100ps turbo  You'll have to try checking all your sensors or at least unplug and replug. When was your cambelt changed :?: If this jumps a tooth you'll also have this problem

sorry dont have vehicle history so dont know when cambelt was changed .
Is it possible cambelt could jump a tooth if it wasnt tensioned properly or perhaps diy mechanic never replaced tensioner trying to penny pinch.

what does the management light look like on a ldv as ive not got an owners manual.

Your in the wrong forum :!: On a smiley Transit a red light comes on in the shape of an engine  Who's to say someone hasn't removed it/no provision :? Try and listen carefully at the front of the engine for scaping noises to help point prob to belt. Best heard when cold though :!:

ecu on a tranny is under dash on passenger side so on a ldv it will probably be up the outside under one of the wheel arches :P   nah try under the dash somewhere follow the main loom coming out of the epic pump and it will go thru a big rubber thingy into the bulkhead somewhere  the ecu should be the other side :D post a piccy of the engine that will tell what ps it is as you never know it might of been changed :?
