sooty transit

Postby pgard16 » Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:56 pm

I have 1996 2.5di, seems to put out lot of soot after it has been left idleing for a while, although when driving there is no smoke, also seems to be lacking on power, i am guessing this is caused by the exhaust gases being recurculated and the fault lies with the gubbins that goes from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold (is it possible to have to much recirculated gasses?), anbody have any knowledge of these symptoms :)

Black smoke is always a sign of unburnt diesel being sent out of the engine. I might think that your injection pump need either an overhaul, replacement (can do a 2nd hand one, as long as the code on the side of the pump matches the injectors) or get the pump timed (maybe with an ovehaul, depends on your budget) Hope this helps.

Not really sure if this is relevant but i'll tell you anyway :D - I had a problem with my camper (not a transit) failing the MOT on excessive smoke - Emmissions were perfect!! I was told it was the injectors but when i took it to a diesel specialist he said it was just soot gathered in the exhaust!!!

He advised me to get some "stop smoke" diesel addative - ive allways been unsure of products like that but when it was explained to me how it worked i thought i'd give it a go - the idea is that it doesnt actually clean the engine its the exhaust it cleans!!
anyway put it in drove down the road 5 mins them - boom (was told that would happen) absolutley loads of black smoke came out of the exhaust for ages then stopped :D - cut a long story short MOT passed :D

Not sure thats your problem but mabe worth a try!!! :?

I believe the soot is caused by the unburnt diesel, as Luke said it builds up in the exaust and exits as soot. Think about it logically, how else would a particle bigger than the injector hole, and not a gas, come through/out of the engine?

changed air filter & no effect, and when i changed oil it cured it for a while, which is what is making me think it is the Egr as this is conected to both exhaust and inlet manifold and also to the oil cap, seems to much exhaust gases are being recirculated. I will block off the egr at the exhaust. I'll let you know how it goes

you could try that but i had a 93 transit and done that and it made it much worse! in the end i took of the inlet manifold and gave it a good cleanout, it was full of black oily stuff,it went much better after that but its a messy job to do! :D

Ive just fitted a 1996 di. in my mk1 Glendale camper. when the engine was in the doner van it smoked like yours is doing. by accident i slipped and broke the egr pipe from exhaust manifold to inlet. I decided to cap it off at the exhaust manifold end and removed the butterfly flap in the inlet manifold. IT WORKS A TREAT. Try this, if you don't brake owt you can always put it back if it dunt work. Luke is nearer to it saying soot build up in exhaust system. GOOD LOOK..
