MY TRANY DIES ON HILLS MK 1 V4 CAMPER CI Coach Built

Postby drifter » Thu Apr 06, 2006 7:16 pm

wHEN i WAS DRIVEING HER BACK FROM THE OLD OWNERS.
ON THE LEVEL SHE GOES GREAT 65 + NO PROBS.
AND THE OVERDRIVE WORKS GREAT.
BUT WHEN SHE GETS PART OF THE WAY UP HILL, THE SPEED DROPS FROM 60 MPH TO 30MPH VERRY QUIKLY, AND I HAVE TO PUT HER IN 3RD GEAR HIGH, EVEN 3RD LOW AT TIMES.
ANY IDEAS PLEASE.

IT HAS ONLY DONE 75,000 MILES I HAVE THE OLD MOT'S, FROM WAY BACK. :?: :?: :?:

i think i know the van you are on about , if its the one from ebay i think you had a good buy"! the problem is you are pulling a big body and a 70ish bhp v4 is going to strugle up the hills ,and also you will loose some power on gas as well! but a good service wont do her any harm  i had the same problem with mine and mine is a pannel van and when i had the caravan on the back i was down to just over 20mph on the hills ,this is why i changed to the v6 overdrive! but if you can live with it and the engine is good then leave it alone!
also overdrive when you are selecting 3rd overdrive thats is the same ratio as 4th gear! this is why it wont pull that well in 3rd overdrive!

Marks got it dead right. The overdrive is OK on the flat or down hill but going up hill is a different story.I'd be inclined to check the compressions (LPG gives the exhaust valves a hard time) and if they're OK leave it alone.

Fuel Tank Breather

Postby Aquanaut » Mon Apr 10, 2006 5:26 pm

This may be different on yours, but my Tranny, Diesel was killing me on the hills sometimes.
There is a wiers type of Fuel Tank Breather unit that seems to completely shut when slightly tilted, can understand why.
What this would do to mine is block the air vent to the Fuel tank, creating a vacuum in the tank, thus starving the fuel injection pump.
It would then correct itself on the straight.
Its worth a look, but make sure your tank is properly vented.
It has broke my heart for the past month.
