oil everywhere

Postby monkey » Mon Apr 17, 2006 11:08 am

recently bought a 1992 lwb high top i intend to turn into a camper. havin run it for a month as a commuter, including motorway mileage.
i yesterday did 300 miles on the motorway at about 70 and seem to have used 3 litres of oil, having never used any in the last month. the bottom of the engine is covered n i cant work out where its coming from, the oil pump is the front most point that is covered in oil but the surrounding area isn't. are there any particular places i should look as i dont know transits well yet?

Welcome monkey, try looking above the oil to the dryer bits of the engine. It's going to be a seal or gasket of some kind, maybe the rocker cover or believe it or not did the filler cap come off? All transit engines have some kind of oil leak or other, but not usually to the extent of using 3L. Is there any smoke? Blue-grey smoke is a sign that the engine is using the oil, engine using iol is down to either the valve guide seals or piston rings worn. Is it petrol or diesel by the way?

its a diesel. is there any gaskets i should look at in particular. any that are under particular pressure? the oil pump's got oil on it, but not the engine mount behind it which i thought would be covered if it was that leaking. just cant figure it out :x

Bet your mates pleased with all that oil over his windscreen :? Could you use some gunk and a jet wash to clean it all off then have another look after a short jouney

I would also give the oil filler cap/breather a good soak in petrol or some type of cleaner as if it is a bit choked with carbon then the build up of pressure that would occur on a 300 mile motorway journey would not be sucked into the air intake manifold (the banana) enough and pressure would build up and force it passed the rocker cover gasket.
Also dont over tighten but check the rocker cover bolts are not loose.
Good luck. Mike

Ours looked as if it was pouring out the back but tightening the rocker cover gasket, as smooth hound said, helped.

the most prone spots are
1 the rocker covergasket
2 oil filter houseing
3 fuel lift pump on the side of the block if you have!
