MOt advisory points - advice sought

Hello,

Just passed MOT with a number of advisories, just after details (what consequence of not fixing, priority of dealing with, ease of DIY for someone more used to working on push bikes and rough ballpark prices to expect at garage if anyone is in the know) for correcting the following..

Front Rusty Brake discs slightly pitted 3.5.1h

Exhaust partly deteriorated 7.1.1.a

Nearside front steering rack gaiter deteriorated 2.2.D.1d

Front coil spring corroded (both sides) 2.4.C.1b

Rusty battery tray (I think this one is the easiest?!)

Bothe side front inner wing under bonnet rusty

vehicle underside showing signs of surface rust (it's 19 years old so surely to be expected? tho it wasn't noted last year)

Oil leak from engine (not noticed any spots where it's parked for 2 weeks plus at a time, but if they say so...)

Any advice much appreciated, I'm still a total klutz on these things.

It passed so nothing is classed as serious or defective.


The battery tray is a wire brush and Hammerite job DIY .

As for the rest how much would you want to pay out on a 19 year old van for advisory work ?

I'd leave it till next year

me to but i would spray the under side with wast oil to help proteck a bit

Thanks, got a friend looking into it to. I understand it's not essential, prevention better than cure though?

do you mean old chip fat? or is 'wast' oil something particular?

Take it you won't be parking your van on any customers drives then?

Battery tray as referred too above needs replacing. Can anyone please recommend a good dealer in w.mids for these sort of bits? Mk3 t100

So what? Leave it and you will probably find the pitting has gone next year

Have a look - you don't want it to break off - exhausts arn't that expensive

I would replace that sooner rather than later tbh

Investigate - if it looks like there is anything more than serious rust replace em before they break!

If the battery is secure dont worry about it - if not you can get new ones. (if its a drivers side tray I have a good used one here)

I wouldn't worry about it too much - its not going to cause anything to fail

Any suggestion on what the Haynes manual would call a steering gaiter and front coil spring. Neither mentioned in my copy.

Battery tray is no longer secure, it is passenger side. Wondering where best to shop for one in mids, or online. Any recommendations?

You used to be able to get them as a standard item from panel suppliers, try Discount body panels on the Warwick road in Birmingham or alternatively get a cordless drill and drill out the spot welds on some old knacker in a breakers yard! failing that get some bungee cords and do what everyone else seems to do! incidentally, is it the tray or the fixing for the securing bar which has gone? penny washers spring to mind.

The MOT tester is just covering his butt with some of that, but some of it like the steering rack gaitors are def worth a look - Matts assesment is pretty much spot on.
