Fitting Air Horn to a Mk6?

Postby ukgovsucks » Mon Nov 09, 2009 3:50 pm

Sorry to sound like a total noob on this, but I AM a total noob!!

Since getting my Transit last week I've been busy buying all those things for it to smarten it up a bit more. One thing that I thought definitely needed sorting was the horn. The factory fitted one is pathetic. So I decided to buy an Air Horn from speeding.co.uk after reading through a thread on here. The only problem is, I haven't got a clue how to fit it! Anything electrical and I'm useless. At least with vehicle stuff anyway!
Here's what I've got...

What the hell is that block thing? Do I need it?

I basically want to remove the original horn first, which judging by the Haynes Manual that I've bought is pretty easy. But it's fitting this that's the problem. According to Haynes I pull off a couple of wire connectors from the original horn. Is it a case of connecting these up to the two connections under the Air Horn?

Help. I haven't a clue! lol.

You can't just connect the air horn to the existing wiring without a relay because the extra current draw would just blow the fuse. Some one was asking the same question last week and they were supplied with wiring diagrams and instructions on how to wire these up so I would suggest a search to find that post.

Check the rating of the fuse in your van, I fitted one of those horns to my MK7 without the relay as it draws less current than the fuse is rated at. MK6 maybe different though, so you should certainly check.

Mmmm... well that was a waste of time! I found the 'wiring diagram' as you suggested and to someone like me who has no clue whatsoever with electronic symbols/terms it looks totally jibberish to me! As I already said, I no NOTHING about this sort of stuff. I am 43 you know, not some student studying electronics etc! lol.

Looks like I'm going to get a mechanic out to help me. Never mind.

On the top of the box reads the following...

12V <18A
24V <9A
530Hz+-5%
680Hz+-5%
>115 dB(A) a 2m
>139 dB(A) at 4in

I hope that's what you mean? lol.

18 amp then :D what mk van is it going on :?: and what size is the fuse for the existing horn :?: :D

18 amp seems a bit high you'll probly need the relay but if you do dont worry its an easy job :D

Thanks lads! Super stuff!!
It's dark now, so I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Fingers crossed!
:D

Edit...

Just looking at your sketch. That fuse bit got me wondering, is this block thing that I have with the horn got a fuse in it?
Here is a close up...

It says 12V 30A on it?

30A is the largest current draw that you should be switching with it.

Yeh 30a is the biggest load the relay can switch

To wire it in you'll need a fuse holder, 20amp fuse, some thickish wire, and a few crimp connectors

maybe as you are "43 you know" and "know NOTHING about this sort of thing",,,, it would be worth you getting an auto electrician out to do the job, and watching what they do,, so that you can pick their brains while they do the job. Its easier to understand stuff like this when you see it being done 'in the flesh'

Someone i know tried to wire in something simple like a stereo headunit, and put the fuse in the wrong place (too far from the battery), the wire chaffed through and burnt his car to the ground.... he would have been better off getting help wiring it in, and watching someone else do it,, or having a look at someone elses work at least.
