rev counter/speedo

Postby steviebee » Thu May 04, 2006 4:40 pm

Hi All Im new to this forum so be gentle with me! I have just read about fitting speedo and rev counter from mondeo TD into the transit. I was wondering if the speedo has to be recalibrated or does it work ok. My van is a 1999 2.5 Di I believe it was made in malaysia? It has the earlier style dashboard the one with two radio holes. it has full service history and is in very good condition apart from a little bit of rust on rear wheel arch and drivers door. Any info on speedo or malaysia imports appreciated as this is my first Transit and it is all new to me.

Have a read of this and then decide if you really want to bother!

rev counter

Postby steviebee » Mon May 08, 2006 8:49 pm

Hi, sorry I didn't reply sooner but have had to work all over the weekend and had no time to check out the forum. It does seem to be a lot of work just for one extra instrument, but I have always been a glutton for punishment when it comes to fitting bits and pieces to cars & vans. I will give it a go this weekend (if breakers still has mondeo diesel in)

Regards

Steve.

Firstly before you start, you need to establish if you have a mechanical cable driven speedo or an electronic one

rev counter

Postby steviebee » Sun May 14, 2006 5:16 pm

As promised report on rev counter. I fitted it last night took 50 mins from start to finnish no problems at all, just had to run the white/black wire from third terminal on alternator. Must admit looks good when lit up at night. Feel free to ask any questions if you are going to fit same.

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Can this dash change be done if you (or "me" in this case :D ) have the electronic speedo version?
Does the later mondeo have an electronic type dash, and if so does it fit?

Cheers

rev counter fitting

Postby steviebee » Sun May 14, 2006 6:48 pm

Please note this is for the Mk5 diesel Transit with the 3 terminal alternator and mechanical speedo.

Tools Needed.
Phillips screwdriver
T 20 torx Driver
10mm socket
Spanner for battery Terminal.

Firstly check if you have mechanical or electronic speedo, then source your speedo/rev counter either from a Mk 1 Mondeo diesel or appropriate Transit dash. Try to get the multi plugs at the same time as you will need the white/black wired connector. remove any unwanted lamps ie ABS, Airbag etc.as these are not needed.

1. Dissconect Battery.

2. Remove top and bottom steering colum shroud (2 screws bottom 1 screw top).

3. Remove multi function stalks (lights/ indicators etc) for this you need T20 Torx Driver.

4. Remove the 4 screws that holds surround and remove through top between steering wheel and dash (be careful as it is only plastic and can be a bit fiddly)

5.Remove the 5 screws that hold in the instrument panel.

6. Pull panel forward and remove left hand multi plug then speedo cable then right hand multi plug, then pass the instument panel out of the right hand side between steering wheel and dash.

7. Remove the cover on the large multi plug, this exposes all the connectors the no you need for the rev counter is no 8. Press home the white/black connector in no 8 terminal and connect tail end of this cable to new cable.

8. Pass cable through speedo cable hole and feed round to alternator and secure along route using cable ties.

9. Connect to right hand terminal (no 3) on alternator using a crimp conector. This terminal should already have a white/black cable connected but it only goes to a terminal block next to the battery so dont worry about it.

10. Replace multi plug connectors and speedo cable back onto instrument panel.

11. I now reconected the battery and made sure rev counter worked and all lights worked including illumination lights.

12. Refitting is now just a reversal of the removal.

If you are unable to get the multi plug connectors I have several other different coloured cable ones, ok not the correct colour but not a problem if you e-mail me with your address I will send you one in the post to get you out of trouble. any problems e-mail me and I will see if I can help.
Hope I have explained it ok, and good luck.
PS I did not have to change any other connections and it really is just a direct replacement.

rev counter

Postby steviebee » Sun May 14, 2006 6:56 pm

Hi Ecosse, the answer is I dont know about the electronic ones although all things are possible I dont see why not. I believe the later Mondeos did have the electronic speedo. Sorry I cant be of any more help on this one perhaps some one else has done this conversion before, but if it was me I would give it a go and see, I will try and pick up a mondeo workshop manual and look at the wiring diagram to see if it sheds some light on it. If it helps I bought the speedo/ rev counter from my local breakers for £20 and I could have had either the mechanical or later electronic one for that price. I hope someone else can throw further light on this one for you
