It would help if we knew what van you have??

If its a mk5 the first thing I would be investigating is the light switch...
I had to replace my heater motor because it siezed (but this isnt common)

can you use a multimeter?
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)
09 140PS T330S 2.2

Gaffa tape is like the force, it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together

Probably not related but my van had a problem with dash lights/side lights/wipers e.t.c. not working and it turned out to be a relay. This one :

The one marked I (one-with picture of key on it) It's the bottom left(black one) relay in this pic:

If i wiggled the actual relay everything would work again :D so i replaced it and all good since.

As i say it might not be related but worth a try.

Relay 1 is the Ignition relay (hence key symbol) and feeds a lot of the ignition controlled circuits including headlamps. It has much bigger terminals than the other relays.

Prone to pins melting/parting where lights multiplug fits on to light switch at steering column,
Disconnect plug & have a look,or first wiggle wires with lights in position 1 and see if they come on

FRAG YOUR THE MAN!!!
THANK FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS I HAVE TRYED THEM ALL, BUT MR FRAG WINS
IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE STUPID TINY PIN ON THE LIGHT STALK MY METHOD OF FIXING INVOLVED JAMMING A
MATCH IN BEHIND THE WIRE THAT FEEDS IT AND (ALINEING THE PINS AT THE FRONT) WORKS GOOD AS GOLD FOR THE TIME BEING!
THAks all, spooks
