Postby antony1 » Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:28 pm

hi guys i was just wondering if i should do this deal i have been offered a 85 t260 2.0 turbo 54 transit swb slight bits of rust 180000 miles engine looked after by dealer clean inside no heavy work bit worried about mileage and turbo clutch done 160000 miles will cost me a grand plus vat

i currently have a 1997 p reg transit 80 swb non turbo bit scaby around the arches and could do with new seat was used as council builders van before i had it only 81900 miles cracking little 2.5 engine and rwd which i like and really dont know wether to keep because i know its a good runner with low miles and not bad to work on but if i bought the other one i would have to sell i have tested the other one and they both seem same ie pulling power accelaration etc all i do is put a bike in and tow a caravan

and i dont know much about newer transits any one give me some pointers

cheers ant

the guy who has been using this thought that the mileage is high and possibly the turbo would be a bit tired mechanically the van is sound and yes all seems pretty similar to my 97 smilley rumer at work reckons the gaffa may drop quite a bit on price on the 54 plate the guy who used this 54 van has now got it back as his brand new 59 plate van only managed 3 miles before it broke down then i can get it when its fixed

turbo should be fine if right oils been used and changed correctly, they can give a bit of oil out its normall as it heat up and cools. The way there designed means they become noisy before totally giving up seals.
Must be a reason they think turbos going to go :?: :?: i s their a boost leak :?: :?: or the wastegate actuator may be stuck, theses can be replaced on there own.

if it drives same as smiley  then id be expecting pump to go pretty soon, prob low fuel pressure.

Does the fact that it can cost a 2 grand "service " not scare you? in reality its personal choice, if you do a lot of miles and fuel consumption / refinement are an issue then get a mk6 and if its allready had lots of money spent, all well and good, Theyre cracking vans to use.
If you're short on pennys and only do local journeys I'd think long and hard as the one you know will allways be cheaper. just treat it to a good dose of waxoyl! If you haven't got 2 grand sitting in the bank ready for the next bit to fall off!! I wouldn't be looking for a tired mk6!
A mate has just made the same choice this week, a tidy mk6 or keep his mk4, having heard the potential costs he decided not to risk it as he doesn't do the miles to warrant it, the mk4 has prob cost him about £100 quid a year in repairs for 5 years, I'm not sure the average mk6 can manage that :?

Ollie

PS I'm not anti Mk6 as most are cracking vans, The horror stories / pub facts often don't tell of the neglect or abuse that lead to the costs in the first place! its just a horror for you if you've got a lemon and no money!

Why did you ask for our opinions when you had already made up your mind to buy it?
