transit 350 125 2004 elwb

hello every body i have a transit 125 04 model chassis cab...
it was diffiicult to start this morning and after driving 40 miles
i was stopped behind a smoky bus and wen bus drove of i was left with a ticking tappet noise
and a noise from the air box loud popping pop pop pop wen at standstill
drives fine but lacks some performance...is only problem but taps and pops at tick over
any help would be great

sounds like a hydraulic tappet collapsed so the valve is not opening and closing properly
or even a burnt out valve

Popping noise from airbox indicates valve train fault,inlet side....
Seen them spin a lobe on cam,wedging valve open,needs rocker cover off to check for rocker arm/roller cam faults.
A compression test may indicate faulty cylinder,but then you have risk of breaking a glowplug trying to remove them.
I`d start by taking r/cover off,get the feeling you will see an obvious fault
