steering correction

Postby danny09 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 12:32 am

i just bought a transit van - yay for me?
its a blue mk5 i believe - 1995 - i dunno ....... its a van

anyway - when the wheels are straight the steering wheel is turned left. can i take the steering wheel off and bolt it back up straight - or do i need to do this at the actual wheels - if so how - or should i count my losses and take it to a garage?

not bad these transits are they? bit of a bad boy image - quite like it - been looking round the board liking the aggresive look of an A-bar and 2 fog lights and 4 spots on the roof

also i have here 2 workshop manuals 1978 onwards but looks like they dont really cover the 1995 - looks like the older mk1 mk2 models - the cooler looking ones - these any good to me and my 95

The steering wheel is splined so can not be moved, it is off centre because a garage has set the tracking incorrectly. If you take it somewhere that knows what they are doing with tracking they will sort it.

agree with above,,, when the garage sets the tracking they should centre the wheel and adjust the tracking around it,, so you end up with a straight wheel and you going in a straight line. :D

I'd have thought it would cost nearer £50, but ask around

for 50 quid it can stay like that - all they do is align the wheels with a laser and turn a couple bolts dont they - infact im pretty sure it will say how in a manual - i dont have a laser but the edge of a piece of timber will act as an alignment tool i reckon :?:

Think of it this way, How much is two tyres, how long will they last if you don't get it done?

But like I said ask around, I'm only guessing the price
