What people do not realise is that there is a bottom to the lense aswell as the top... if the dirts underneath a small can of compressed air may shift the muck, but in this case could possibly mechanical damage?

I have had this before on a boom box when repairing it, there is a laser with a lens, looks a little like an eyeball. In that case the action of inserting two cds had scratched or dislodged the lens itself. It sounds like you are going to have to remoce the set and do some open heart surgery on it.
