99 luton, whats what

Postby thefishingbear » Thu Dec 31, 2009 9:41 am

i need your help..
just purchased a transit lwb t reg 190 luton.
twin wheeler
starts on the button, clean, infact very clean and well looked after.
just had cambelt done and full service.

PROBLEMS.....
HOW DO I FIND OUT IT MK ? IS IT 4/5/6
HOW DO I FIND OUT ITS PS? 75/100???
NOT A SPEED MACHINE, GETS TO MAYBE 60 AND SEEMS TO TOP OUT, BUT I DID NOTICE THAT ON HILLS ON THE M25 IT DID SEEM TO LOOSE SOME POWER GOING UP AND I HAD TO DROP DOWN TO 4TH TO KEEP AT 40, WOULDN'T GO FASTER.. ANY IDEAS????? I'VE ALWAYS HAD TD'S, THIS ONE ISN'T

i hope someone out there can shed some light on this lot..
not really a problem as all my work will be local, within 10 miles say, but i'd like to know to ease my mind, or get it done if it needs it..

BY THE WAY...
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL

go to www.etis.ford.com put your reg or vin number, it wilcome up with most imformation for you. could be you have a low power model, and being a luton twin wheel will have towing axel ratio, a similar transit with a pick up body we had would only do 80 mph new down hill, so with luton body wont be fast at all

I would say you have a mk5 with a 76ps banana engine by the sounds of it and like angeleye sais with a 5.14 diff.

Mine does about the same speed as you described.

all luton vans are never going to be speed machines or economical with the aero dinamics of a brick going sideways..My old mk3 luton did only 65mph downhill and about 45mph uphill and i tweaked the fuel pump a bit to do that..

A T reg is a MK 5, the standard engine output for a 190 of this vintage is 76ps, and as has already bben said it will have a 5.13 diff and the aero dynamic qualitys of a house brick, All old Lutons are slow, But you could Turbo it and try to find a better diff

with a taller diff the uphill speed would be unbearable turbo's a good idea tho

Hi Fishingbear, I have the same vehicle but an Extra long wheel base version. Mine is a 90 ps unit with a 5 .13 diff. So reliable do NOT change anything, its built like that to give you good low down pull away power but not so much top speed, makes the clutch last longer. You don't need a flying luton, you've got to stop it safely. May help if you have a cone shape on the front of the box to increase air flow. The old Mk5 engine is bomb proof, all the time I have had mine its been 100% reliable. Can't ask for any more better. John L.

Totally agree with John... a standard MK 5 looked after will gone on & on...Mine has cost me bugger all to run...I have got a nice fast MK7 Luton too..the running costs I have covered on other threads...
