Replacing N/S quarter glass window 1994 Transit - Advice Pls

Postby rgv250ads » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:32 pm

Hi All,
after locking my keys in I tried to lever out this window and almost had it but it broke before I could get it out. Needless to say got a replacement coming from evil bay.

When re-fitting the glass, any tips.

Should i wrap the new glass in the weather sealant strip then attempt fitting, from inside the vehicle or outside?, or, put the weather strip in the door surround then attempt to fit the glass into it ?

Probably a silly thing to ask but dont want to make life difficult for myself and dont want to break the new window before its even fitted.

Anyone who's done this before i'd be interested to hear what the correct procedure is.
Thanks & Happy new year !

Fit the gasket to the glass. Wrap some string around the U shaped outer channel leaving about 6" spare at each end of the string to pull on. It's easiest if you leave the string poking out at the bottom corner. Smear some washing up liquid over the steel lip in the opening.

Offer up the glass into place and locate the bottom edge of the gasket into its proper place. SLOWLY pull one of the loose strings. Pull it towards the centre of the piece of glass. If you do it right, it should flip the gasket around the steel lip. It is easiest if you work along the bottom to the front of the van and then up the raked edge to the top point, leaving the vertical side till last.

Once it is all in place, smooth out any wrinkles in the gasket and you're good to go :D

Next time, slice the gasket. It's cheaper to replace than the glass

indeed, wish i'd have done that now, but the van was butted up against the garage door (where all me tools are!) with the handbrake on and in 1st gear so i could only use basic tools acquired from the shed.

The string technique sounds interesting - and I can't quite picture what you are saying, any chance of posting photo's ? :)

Very roughly....

Image

The H shape is your gasket, wrapped around the glass (shown in green). The string (red) is wrapped around the outer channel in the gasket.

When you offer the unit into place, make sure the bits of string left hanging out are dangling inside the van. Then firmly hold the unit into place with one hand and slowly pull the string with the other. It should flip the gasket over the steel lip.

Any of the lip which doesn't pull over with the string, can be flipped over by gentle persuasion with a screwdriver :)

Plastic tyre levers are always good for this.

If you remove the door card and unscrew the pillar at top and bottom, it will come out.
