Removing Alternator on Xreg(2000) 2.4 diesel 330MWB TD

Postby car1tref » Mon Jan 04, 2010 5:39 pm

Anyone got a diagram for the removal/ accessing the alternator, I've done it plenty of times on cars etc but never on my reliable Transit!?!?
Have searched and searched the forum to no avail- have to get the alternator to a repairer by 8am tomorrow and I dont have a manual!!
Also been quoted £247 +vat just for the part from my local Ford dealer?

Thanks again AndyG!
Just to let anyone interested know, I started this post to get help to remove the alternator, so here is my tale:
Battery light comes on dash and stays on even after starting the engine and driving for about 5 miles and back.
I decide to remove my alternator to take to a repair specialist locally as my local Ford dealer had quoted £200 + for a replacement.
Three bolts later and its out.
The Auto Unit LtD just up the road then test the alternator and suspect the brushes have gone, they replace same for £27 + vat and test again and it works perfect, not bad for a unit that comes off a tranny thats done 180000 miles +
Refit took 2 of us as the belt had to fit around 5 pulleys and it had to be supported from below by one person and the person above had to use a Bar to push one of the self tensioning pulleys back to allow enough slack to alow the three bolts to be put back in!!! :!:  :?
It was a nightmare as you need a pair of hand below to pull the alternator down to line up with the three holes for the bolts, a pair of hands to actually bolt them in and a hand and shoulder to apply pressure to the bar to push the tensioner pulley out of the way.
NOW someone tell me a better method- come on you mechs out there- especially as It's done now :!: :!:
I just hope I did it right.
I have a small 4 light indicator plugged into my cigar lighter and it now lights up all four lights showing the alternator is charging fully.

Easier way as requested;
Use bar (or 3/8 square drive) to lever tensioner back & drop belt off pulley (alternator) release tension.
remove 3 bolts & 2 wires to alternator & remove.
Fit new `un.
Refit belt.

No offense taken :)
You asked for a better method ?
What i`m trying to say is remove/fit alternator with belt, therefore tension removed.
Then put belt back on. :)
From your description you fitted alternator fighting against belt and tensioner, suprised you even did it

Thanks, we did try getting installed with the belt off but as we were unaware that there was a tensioner/pulley on there as we had no information or manual to go on, we ended up doing it the way that worked- we only discovered after much pulling and pushing that the pulley moved and by then the alternator was on with the belt around it!!
Thats why I asked for help on here a day before I started the job but unfortunately had no response at the time :(
I must say what a complicated way to get it done , have done many cars and lorries over the years but have never come across this tensioner business
Anyway thanks for the comments and I will know next time :)
