van making a very bad squeeling noise off the belt

Postby shrek100 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 4:17 pm

hi,
i have an 51 plate ex british gas rwd transit. it has been making a very bad squeeling noise from the belt area, i took it too the garage and they had trouble finding out what it was so they changed the belt tensioner and the bottom pulley it still makes a very loud squeeling noise. the garage owner said that the air con pump was taken off and this might have something to do with it????????? has anybody got any ideas as it would be very much appreciated as can't afford to keep taking it back to the garage all the time for the problem not to be solved.
thanks.

When my 52 plate was squealing i thought it could be a dry pulley but it turned out to be the auxiliary belt, van had only done about 64k as well.

this time of year theres a lot of moisture gets on the belts and it can cause them to squeal a lot
try some powdered chalk sprinkled on to the belts one at a time , it will help it dry the belts or if a belt is doing it through being worn it will stop it for a short time , this should help you find which belt it may be , if its a belt

thanks for the replies will have a look at the different options. don't know if it makes any difference but the mechanic changed the belt again after all the work and the noise stopped for a few days then came back do you think it could be a dodgey tensioner

thanks
