Electrical problem ( rear lights and dash lights)

Postby and1ne13 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 8:47 pm

I was going around my day to day run as I do and noticed the dashboard lights were not on, after some inspection I seen the rear lights were not working.

I checked the reverse light, hazards and brake light and they all work fine which I found strange.

I have had a look at the fusebox and checked there were a couple fuses out but nothing to do with the rear lights.

I am pretty confused and no electrian so any help could be a great help as i need the lights for the van ..

when you say dashboard lights what do you mean? is it when the dials light up when it is dark, do your sidelights work on the front? A bit more detail on the vehicle?

the dash illumination is on the same curcit as the sidelights so prob a fuse or a faulty switch

You didn't say on what van, but on my Mk4, it was the light stalk - just got a replacement from a scrapper, and fitted it (two torx screws to remove the old one, after taking off the column cowl).

If it's not a fuse, this is the most likely to be up with it (for some reason, Ford decided to run all the power for sidelights, dashboard lights and rear-lights through the switch, but the dipped beam through a relay!).
Some people say I am stupid... I never realised I was that clever.

You should always prefix a query with details of your van. If it's a Mk5, this is quite common:

viewtopic.php?p=445151#p445151
'69 Mk1 V4 :) >> '76 Mk1 V4 :) >> '84 Mk2 OHC  >> '97 Mk5 Banana :D >> '09 Mk7 TDCi 8)
The van in front is a Transit. It might be my Mk7 - follow the trail of rusty water: Diary of an Ordinary Van
