Auto transmission kaput?

G'day,

My 1994 VE LWB 2.5 DI camper van's auto transmission is acting up. It is the Ford A4LD 4 speed box.

It sounds like the bands are slipping, but eventually engages gear and works. I've rung around the 'experts' and they tell me that I need a rebuild, at around $A2,500. The vehicle has only done 160,000 klms (around 100,000 miles).

They tell me that this box has done well to do this many miles.

Does this sound reasonable to you guys or am I getting 'spin'?

Well, I'm quite embarrassed!

I took the van to a transmission place where the first thing they did, was to check the oil - empty! Filled it up with the good stuff and I'm on my way again - woohoo!

Andy, my van does the worst roads I can find in the Oz outback. The last service on the transmission appears, from the documents that came with the vehicle, to have been done 5 years ago - or about 50,000 miles. Not really good eh!?

If the transmission hangs on after the oil fill-up, I'll definitely be getting more regular services done.
