Epic to Bosch pump change - now engine noisier?

Postby Ecosse » Sun May 14, 2006 5:16 pm

Hi All
Searching the web for info and found this place so joined up and looking for help straight away! :)

I have a 190TD which I recently changed from the Lucas Epic pump to a Bosch, it now blows a cloud of blue/black smoke on cold starting (did not do this b4) which disappears within about 5 secs, and although it appears to pull and drive fine I am convinced it is noisier than b4 :?
Its only really noticable at about 60mph and up and it sounds similar to a pinto with a cam on the way out (although not at tickover), could this be from the pump or should I be looking elsewhere (the pump is supposed to have been re-conned)?
And why does it now smoke when cold, could this also be pump related?

All/any help appreciated

Cheers

have you blocked the butterfly open ??
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

To be honest I thought when running with the Epic pump that it was quiet for a transit, I was expecting the Bosch to be at least the same if not better, which is why I am worrying that the pump is the source of the noise. :?
The pump number ends with 145 which I was told is what it should be for the turbo model?

Sounds like the timing might be a touch off, did you adjust the timing to the bosch pump?

Spot on, I did adjust the timing for the bosch pump, had to, to get it to start :x
Killed my battery bleeding it up and could not get it to fire, advanced the timing as far as I could within the notch on the pulley and away it went :D

Is it a bad plan to advance it like that?
I did wonder if it was even advanced enough, but did not want to try b4 knowing more about it

Is there a way to time it properly for the bosch pump?

Cheers

Noisier with a manual pump?

Yes, sounds about right.

One of the main advantages of the EPIC was that the running was alot quieter. It was just a bit crap at everything else

A manual pump won't be as accurate in it's delivery timing as an electronically controlled system is, hence the extra noise.

I had a manual pump on my old N/A engined van and i'll tell you what the reduction in cab noise when I got a turbo van with EPIC was huge, like having a new van...... oh wait it was :)

Noisier is normal but a good price to pay for a better system me thinks.
If it goes, then it's good!!

noiseman: I can live with the noise in that case, so long as it has reliability

When I got the Van it came with a load of history including an invoice for its first (epic) pump replaced at about 3 years old, the second went just after I got it at approx 6 years old, i've had it nearly 2 years now and did not fancy changing another pump anytime soon (crazy money for something that breaks so often  ) hence the reason for installing the bosch pump

Anyway, thanks everyone for the assistance, I'll presume that the extra noise is normal and either live with it or start fitting more insulation

Cheers

diesels go quiet when retarded and noiser when advanced so I'd double check the timing - you can have little "by ear" with the vernier and this is probably the way to go

have fun with it

I second that :!: And now it's running and all the air is out of the system, (and battery has recovered) now would be the time to play a little

The Bosch pump timing has to be advanced its not the same as the epic.5mm on the plunger does the job,if you want it in old money set up as epic and advance the pulley as far as it will go that should do.When i do a conversion i move up a notch on the timing belt so i have lots of travel to get it right .It should not be noisier than an epic ,but then again epics can be very noisy too.White smoke on startup is very common but have never seen it using blue injectors. Its more than likely your timing is out so without test equipment its trial and error mate, but one things for sure the epic system is disaster, its just a hole in the ground that you throw money in to
A WORK OF ART IS A JOY FOREVER
