Excess White smoke smelling of diesel

Postby magpierecycling » Fri Jan 15, 2010 1:18 pm

Hello all....we are newbies to this forum....we are a recycling cooperative based in brighton...we run a small fleet of vehicles...transits and 7.5 tonners...We have recently aqquired a late 98 Transit 190LWB....2.5D...fitted with a Bosch 686-2 pump and standyne 33704 injectors....
Now...strange but...she starts first turn of the key....engine runs smoothly...but she smokes loads of white smoke which smells of unburnt diesel and doesn't clear at all...I have pressure and spray checked all injectors, changed PTFE sealing washers on injectors (and checked no old ones left in!), replaced all return pipework, removed a blanking plate in EGR, and she still smokes...ANY IDEAS, .....don't think it's timing as that would surely create black smoke,,,or at least clear a bit under throttle as it advances....maybe water in fuel system??? Although smoke seems 2b unburnt diesel....or maybe something more esoteric like crack in head...but there is no other indications of that!....HELP PLEASE!! THANKS....Richie, Magpie Recycling Cooperative :D

First job is to check pump timing, too much advance is possible and condition of belt. Air in the system would cause these symptoms, but would normally create a starting issue as well.

Does sound like timing, you seem to have checked everything else. I'd also do a cylinder pressure test and tappets.

Cheers.....will check static pump timing.....have already adjusted tappets....not checked compression...but like I say, engine seems 2 run well and have decent power...but if no joy with pump timing, might just take off head and check it out!!! Hmmmmmmm.....

could it be that the fuel pump has been turned up too much? also you say the egr blanking plate has been removed so its quite possible that the `egr and pump mod` has been done and the pump needs turning back a tad, usually people ask about blanking the egr not taking it out, so maybe if you put the blanking plate back and turn the pump down a bit might help

i would check the timing first ,some di ,engines can be funny and run off of the marks, i would mess about with the timeing and see if you can stop it smokeing
if it still continues then maybe pump or head but never herd of head problems as such! its unburnt diesel so it points to pump related somewere, aslo have you took it out for a good run ?????

Okay...thank u all for the suggestions....we are still struggling with this one....I have static checked the timing and it seems spot on...we have drained the tank, blown through the lines and fitted new filter.....still no different,,, so I guess were into faulty pump or something cylinder head orientaited,,,we have no compression tester, but the engine starts and runs well apart from the fault....hmmmm....the pump is a bosch 686 unit and am not familiar with this pump..wondering if anyone knows were the power adjust would be on it, or where I might find a schematic of it? ,,,,

33706 are 70 PS injectors...

Isnt the 686-2 a 76PS injection pump? There will be a long string of small numbers on the pump, above the 686-2 what are they?

Does your inlet manifold look like this?

Injectors are 33704....pump is 686-2......numbers above on same plate..(plate orientaited sideways!) are "0 160 414 145".... can't really see inlet manifold from photo to compare,,,

You have the wrong injectors then!

Your van needs 33706 injectors to match that pump, or a post '97 70PS injection pump
