water pump

Postby InterGAS » Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:59 am

Hi, I am going to have a go at changing the water pump on my 2001 transit swb front wheel drive.
The van just keeps cutting out, temp gauge races up to H, then engine light comes on, then van stops.
If I remove the cap of the water the van runs fine.
When the cap is on the heaters get hot for aout 1 min then get cooler and cooler.
The top pipe gets hot but the bottom one does not.
I am guessing its the pump?

If it is what is it like to change, does the timing belt need to be removed and how easy is it, any diagrams to help me?

Are there any directions to fitting the pump?

Sure its not an airlock or something else ?
Usually when water pump fails, heater doesn`t get hot at all,or pipes to it before van cuts out ?

One pipe hot to heater & other cold suggests airlock........
(assuming you mean heater pipes not radiator ones :? )

It may well be pump failure but to be a bit more confident before fully stripping it,
drain coolant & remove largest pipe to w/p (bottom hose).
If you have fingers like me or E.T you can then feel impeller in pump,if it can be turned with engine stood,by hand/finger.....Its failed.
Water pumps aren`t much fun to do,just trying to save any greif

did my pump last week, best to take off the middle section bumper, and upper grill, then drop the rad, makes it easer to get at the water pump, you will also need to take off the power steering tensioner, easy to do from there on
