Converting a york 2.5 Di to a TDi worth it?

Postby Roscoss » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:46 pm

Hi all and thanks for taking a look at my question :D

New to the forum as I was originally going to buy a transit and convert it to a camper myself but found a good deal on an LDV that had already been converted instead. Sorry guys :?

I am about to buy a 2001 LDV 400 Convoy camper and was looking into converting it to a turbo. I am new to diesel engines and new to ford engines for that matter (I am an aussie that sits on the holden side of the fence :D ). I have found this thread of another guy who attempted this conversion but it sounded like there were a few teething problems... this the thread i am referring to http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=37635 I have also seen in a few other threads that I will prob need a turbo oil sump or modify the existing one; new intake manifold; new exhaust manifold; new dump pipe and exhaust system; injectors; possibly a new fuel pump?; and of course the turbo and associated oil lines etc.

Could anyone give me some advice and indication as to how much it would cost me to do? Would it be better to use a turbo from another ford diesel? Do I need to get a new gearbox? Will i need an intercooler? and most of all, how successful do you think the conversion would be? or would I better off installing a whole new engine and matching gearbox? Is this engine even going to be worth doing this conversion to?

The background of the engine is good, it was rebuilt by a diesel fitter 12 months ago and (I am not sure if this is the case with all LDV's) has a transit gearbox.

Thanks again for any advice or direction to other posts, I have had a pretty good look but not exhaustive and will continue to trawl the forums for more info.

Lastly, if there is anyone in London who would like to give me a hand with any of this work, I would greatly appreciate it as I have only been here for 4 months and have no tools, shed or even driveway to do the work in :(

Thanks in advance

Ross

There are quite a few people in the london area!

The best thing to do is get hold of a transit turbo (pre '2000) injectors (could also be from a convoy) and sump - you will also need the turbo exhaust downpipe.

Depending where you are in London I might be prepared to have a shufty at some point
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)
09 140PS T330S 2.2

Why are you wanting to turbo a van you haven't even bought yet :?:

You'd be surprised what a PROPER service with cambelt can do and if you're still not happy, then yo can viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3968 :D

You make a good point Andy. I am off to see the van again for really good looking over today and give it test drive. I was just posting the question as I really wanted a turbo for the extra pulling power up hills in europe while the van was loaded, but since this one was not, I wanted a bit more of an idea of the potential to change the engine to forced induction prior to buying it just so I know :)

As for the service, it has had a recent cambelt service and should be in good nick since it was rebuilt only 12 months ago. I have also seen the how to get the power up thread, cheers :D

Matt, so your suggesting just a pre 2000 turbo in good nick, is there a specific model i should look for or will any do from a transit pre 2000? As for the injectors, will i need those yellow dot ones or just a set from a turbo'd transit/LDV engine and any ford 2.5 tdi sump? I am supposing the downpipe should be the same one that the turbo comes from?

As for a bit of a shufty, I am in brockley, not sure where the van will be kept yet as I don't even know the situation with parking around here!

Any suggestions the best place to look for all these parts? is the parts for sale section a good bet? Are there any dedicated ford van breakers in london that you would suggest visiting? how about ebay, is it reliable for car parts over here?

Thanks again in advance
