Starting problem- lead to Solenoid getting hot?

Postby Dave R » Wed Jan 27, 2010 5:26 pm

Hi, I took out the battery on my 1995 Transit 190 LWB, 2.5 litre van some weeks back. I "wintered it, knowing the bad/cold weather was due.

Now, I have to start it today to move it in order to get a rubbish skip collected.... guess what, it doesn't want to play.
Firstly the battery is probably OK, checked it- 13.8 volts, and hase been on trickle charge for some weeks during the bad weather.

Now, when I try to start- it turns over slowly like a duff batery, but the lead to the solenoid terminal is getting very hot! So, undid the nut (0n solenoid), cleaned it up- and still much the same. Now, I am also getting a clicking sound as well when trying to start.
I does turn over it seems, but getting a burning smell and hot lead to solenoid?
It's a Bosch Solenoid by the way!
Can anyone help me please?
Cheers,
Dave :-)

either you have a dodgy connection on one of the fat leads somewhere or a duff starter

Thanks for that Matt! I have got another starter/solenoid from my local scrappie.....but, can I undo the three bolts that hold the old one in!!! Three hours I spent yesterday, and managed to get 1 of three bolts out!!!!

I can't seem to get the leverage with either my spanners or ratchet socket set- what a nightmare!!!
It's even difficult to get a hammer in there- managed to get a small ball pein hammer in there and tapped them, left soaking in penetrating oil, so fingers crossed, maybe another attemp wll work. I need some sort of impact driver maybe?!
LOL!
