Cut out with no warning

Postby Moots'r'us » Sat Jan 30, 2010 8:33 pm

Evening all,

Just arrived home after being towed in by the father-in-laws vito

Was driving along with the eagles blaring when the van just died at around 40 mph. No warning just cut out and coasted to a stop on the side of the road :(
Just turns over now with no attempt to fire. There are no unusual dash lights showing and as far as can tell no engine management lights. Whilst being towed I had no speedo either but assume that is electronically driven and wont work without engine running?

Any one got any ideas on what to look at in the morning?

Cheers

hi mate what a bummer check the cambelt or the timing sensor is it getting diesel could your fuel filter be blocked , i may check the filter first if it is that it,s a very cheap repair.
Hope my thoughts help you out let us all know how you get on.

Cheers Derek

Is there a quick way to check the belt without destroying the cover? Did think it might be that at first but then found out its a chain so would expect a lot more noise, secondly, when turning over it seems to have normal compression judging by the way it turns over. Would have thought with filter blockage that that would be gradual. Did think of fuel as around 10 miles earlier put in more diesel (deffo diesel and not petrol), but again thought that would be more gradual.

Anyone know any reasonable mobiles in the basildon area who work on a sunday?

Cheers

Don't look for a cambelt you don't have one, you do however have a timing chain which may or may not have jumped

Ok,

I have a chain that is turning with the engine. I also have fuel at the injector. I was cruising at around 50 mph when this happened, I would expect that if the chain jumped it would happen under acceleration rather than a steady speed, or is that still a possibility?

Cheers

when my di does this (3 times now) its been the diesel shut off solenoid failing or the power to the shut off failing , first time was on A1 at night , took shut off plunger out , bled it , drove home , not fun working on van on a stretch with no hard sholder and trucks skimming past a few feet away

Could it be the valve even though diesel is being visibly pumped at the injectors?

Cheers

how much at injectors ? when i first looked at mine i thought it has diesel as i was getting spurts but not much , after i took out the plunger i had way more in the spurts

without checking the timing pins we are all guessing and trying to add so many ideas that you get so confused you give up and get a car lol

There wasn't loads at the injectors.. going to try spraying some easy start into the inlet manifold tomorrow to see if it fires up on that - at least then i'll know it's a fuel problem!

Trouble is I cant move the thing to get codes read at the moment. Also pretty skint too so anything I can do before knocking on the door of mr garage man is worth a try :?

I think the fuel shut off valve might be worth a go. Bazw, from your description, you seem to run the van without the switch in to get it home? Any pointers on getting it out? Like where its located on the pump? Got a haynes book and a Ford TIS disc but haynes book does not mention it and the TIS only tells you to reset it but does not go into how? (as far as I can find anyway).

As far as bleeding the system after, I have a little plunger type affair on top of the fuel filter rather than a bulb that I have had on previous diesels. Is that all thats needed to bleed the system?

Cheers all

the plunger bit on top of filter has it coloured bars on it , if it has this is a service indicator, not a bleed device

No coloured bits on the plunger. Just a black disc about inch and a half diameter that goes up and down.
