Glow plug light on

I have a 2003 2.4 duratorq 90bhp transit which every now and again decides to turn on the glow plug light and turn down the power!! Turning the ignition off and back on again temporarily resolves the problem. The engine also sometimes "holds back" when the light is not on and under normal acceleration, but if you floor the accelerator pedal the engine holds back for about 10secs then suddenly bursts into life with a cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust. I took it to a reputable diesel diagnostic centre who informed me that they could'nt find anything wrong with the injectors,glow plugs or fuel pump. As the emissions were higher than they should be they suggested that the catalytic converter could be blocked and was most likely to be the cause. Fitted new cat and guess what . . . . . . . . . . . . problem still there, although emissions came down and van passed it's MOT. Anyone got any ideas as lack of power when trying to overtake 40 tonne trucks on dual carraigeways can be quite embarrassing! Cheers.

You'll need to have the fault codes read.

Most garages will have a scanner that will do the job, cheaper than you buying one, Transits can be harder to read, as OBD wasn't standard on them till 2005, and even then some code readers won't work
