dead battery/starting probs

Postby jayj » Thu Feb 11, 2010 10:38 pm

the problem is my truck, i just recently put 2 new batteries in after having some starting issues just having the one.

i've piggybacked the 2nd battery off no 1, and now run the winch off no2, now....every morning (and some times during the day) the f*** are dead.

or when i got her running and using the winch, it will surge all power and cut the engine and wont start without bump starting/jump starting.

had a volt meter put on batteries today whilst running and battery 2 is putting out 12.4v on tick over and whilst revving.
no1 (main battery) is putting out 13.4?? (i think) on tick over, and when revved up this drops.

oh its an l reg 2.5td

any help is much appreciated as this is starting to bug me now.

is the winch faulty ? put a bulb across the circuit see if it lights up, might indicate a short in winch or solenoids ?

hi there, most alternators charge with a voltage of just above 14 volts when running so you may have an issue there....just a thought. I would put the probes from your voltmeter on the first battery in line an check if you are getting a good charge current from the Alt first off.

Also, a charged battery should give you a voltage reading of approximately 12.3v + without the engine running

hope this helps.
