Mk 6 thermostat

Postby merv » Fri Feb 12, 2010 5:33 pm

Went to get a thermostat today from Halfords for me mk6 tdci and the geezer in the shop looked it up and said ''No, don't do them, its a ford only part'' so went to a Ford dealer and they quoted £46  which I thought was bloody expensive just for a water stat. Does this sound about right to you guys?, I never asked for gold plated one

well in one way I agree, but years ago they helped me out of a tight spot over one easter bank holiday weekend and without em I'd have been stuck 300 miles from home, so at times they have come in handy. .

So not a ford only part then? I thought that a bit strange when that spotty faced sod in halfords told me that today  , still pissed off with fords quote though, I know ya pay more for genuine parts, but 46 quid was over double what I expected even from fords.

the reason they said ford only part was cos you have a mk6 tdci, which most motorfactors dont list, if youd just asked for a tddi 2.4 stat would have prob gave you one.

they sould only be about £12 from ford though :?
unless, they may give you the whole housing part with the 2.4 i think.

why do you suspect the main stat :?:
the oil cooler stat is far more common.

I did question if it was just the stat or the whole housing and the fella at at the ford MD said it was for the stat only, even HE thought it was a bit expensive.

The reason I thought it was the water stat is because it seems to take a hell of a long time to get up to normal running temp, about 15 to 20 miles of normal driving miles, then if I put the heating and blower on the temp drops on the gauge just drops real rapid, all this with No water loss :? . Maybe it IS the oil cooler stat, what do you reckon going by those symptoms?.

BTW, I really do appreciate the advice you guys give out.... its far better than I got from Fords & HalFORDS

start the van from cold, with no blowers on, let it run 5 minutes, then check the 2 pipes to oil cooler, get too them from bottom of engine on passenger side, they should both be cold if oil cooler stat is not passing.

check top rad hose should be cold also if main stat is not passing.

check the 2 pipes going to heater matrix, both should be almost the same temp, if not then water pump could be failing, which would then cause the main stat to open prematurly anyway.

Both pipes to the heater matrix seem to be the the same temp after running for 5 to 8 mins .... The top hose was still stone cold and the oil cooler pipes seemed warm-ish. Even after running it for a few more minutes nothing seemed to get what I would call hot, not even the bottom hose.
So I'm guessing that the main stat is OK and it could be the oil stat. Any idea where thats located and what kinda job it is to change?.

Once the van does get up to temp its very stable whilst driving in traffic or on the motorways..... The other day I drove 20 and the temp had just about reached its normal running reading without the heating or blower on, I stopped and let the thing tick over for about 5 minutes and put the heating on full with the blower and the gauge just dropped like a stone.

yeah defo sounds like the oil cooler stat, if it were working ok the temp should never drop below 76degrees.

what you got 125ps fwd or 135ps rwd tdci :?:

Its an 06 125 ps fwd with just under 70k mileage.

Big THANKS to ya for all the info, I'd never have thought that the oil cooling would have had that much effect on the water temp  but then again I don't know jack about these things

Sorry to be a pest, but is the oil stat an easy DIY job? also any idea where I can find it?.

yeah its not to bad to do, resonator box off and inlet manifold thats just below it, then you should be able to get to oil cooler stat, thats in the side of water pump, think its the back pipe on the oil cooler, but youll see it.
just remember to use red coolant when topping up.

hope your tdci goes aswell as it should

dont forget the colder days and it will take longer to warm up got 05 tranny and i noticed my temp not going up as far as it was last month its like minus 2 an going up the road will put the chill factor to below 4 or even more 46 quid is a lot ov money to spend out for somthing like that bit ov metal with a spring
