How to wire extra hazard lights only (not indicators)?? Help

Postby Tran59 » Sat Feb 13, 2010 8:57 am

I would like to add two extra flashing lights at the top of my rear windows which flash only when the hazard warning lights are on. The problem is that I don't want them to flash when I use the indicators to turn, as they are 'emergency' strobe-type flashers.

Does anyone know if it's possible to tap into the rear indicators and/or hazard warning light switch so that the strobe lights only come on when all the indicators are flashing?

TIA :)

Given the complex nature of the Can bus wiring on the MK7, it would be far easier just to use a seperate switch, avoiding the need to make an embarrassing warranty claim for a blown up BCM

I would think you would have to run a wire and tap into the hazard relay as you cannot tap into the lights themselves as they would flash with the indicators

Not on a MK 7 you can't there is no hazard relay, its all done by the BCM :(

You would struggle to do this on a MK5 or 6 as the hazards and the indicators share a relay, I'm not saying it cant be done but it would require quite a bit of knowledge and a few relays

Like I said earlier a seperate switch is the easiest way, Also what about lighting regulations? Would having additional lights switched with the hazerds comply with all regs :?:

Why not just use a relay off the supply to the hazard flasher bulb on the dash!!!, vertually no current from the relay.

I'm guessing you've never played with Can-bus or BCM modules before  :?

Leave it alone....Seperate switch is the way forward

Not sure what the French vehicle inspections are like but this would mean an MOT failure in the UK as well if they were wired into the hazard circuit.

The strobe lights would require a constant 12v supply, not one that flashes on and off :?

Many thanks for your words of wisdom, everyone. I think all things considered, I will play safe and go for the separate circuit controlled by a switch.
