black smoke and erratic revving

hi all, i have a 2001 2.0 td
when first started black smoke chucking out , will tick over fine ,but soon as warm erratic revving
still with black smoke,

Read fault codes possible egr valve fault,check basics first like air filter or intake for blockages.
Is the glowplug light on or flashing at all........

i was wrong on the smoke sorry , its blue smoke and from tickover its weird as it ticks over fine for ten mins , then revvs all over place why still puffing the blue, and if anyone is in essex and can sort it today i will pay well lol

could be sticking lifter, valve stem oil seal, injector over fuelling, boost leaks, egr valve stuck...............

how do you read codes its a 2001 model
